FORT WORTH – No. 3 TCU men's tennis commenced the 2023 season in textbook fashion.
In the winner's circle via a comfortable victory in a season and home-opening match.
The Horned Frogs cruised past Abilene Christian 6-1 on Saturday inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
TCU claimed the doubles point via two consecutive victories. The Horned Frogs then posted a 5-0 mark in singles play, dropping just one set. ACU's lone point came in a 10-point pro set in the No. 6 singles position.
"Tennis season has officially started," head coach David Roditi said. "We got our first win today. The guys played very well. We beat ACU here at home on our indoor courts. It's great to see Sebastian Gorzny make his debut as a freshman, Luke Swan made his debut and got a win in doubles, and also our [assistant] coach, Nick Chappell – a historic Horned Frog here at TCU – great to see him make his debut as well. We're excited. We won, and now we get SMU. The Battle for the Iron Skillet here on Monday at 4 p.m. We'd love to see some support. We loved what we saw today. A bunch of other sports came out and supported us. The community came out, and that's always great. It's going to be a battle like it always is against SMU. Go Frogs."
The Horned Frogs moved to 41-9 all-time in season-openers and 11-2 under Roditi with the result. Roditi has yet to drop a home-opener since assuming the program helm in 2010.
Saturday's win extended TCU's program-best indoor winning streak to 13 matches dating back to the 2022 season.
Doubles Rundown
TCU cruised to the doubles point in short order despite being down two players – Jake Fearnley and Tomas Jirousek – due to injury.
As such, Roditi shook up the Horned Frogs doubles flights.
Sander Jong and Lui Maxted, typically the Horned Frogs' No. 2 pairing, were elevated to the No. 1 spot. The team of Gorzny and Pedro Vives assumed the No. 2 spot. Luc Fomba, Fearnley's usual doubles partner in the No. 1 post, dropped down to the third flight and played alongside Swan.
Gorzny and Vives immediately blitzed the Wildcats on court two. The underclassmen tandem raced out to a 4-0 lead opposite the Wildcatts' Cesar Barranquero and Dario Kmet before easing their way to a 6-1 win.
The triumph was Gorzny and Vives' first in dual action. The duo first competed together during the fall 2022 season at the ITA Texas Regional, where they advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Fomba and Swan secured the doubles point shortly thereafter. The tandem assumed a 4-2 advantage over Daniel Morozov and Jose Mario Rastrojo and closed the set via two consecutive points.
Swan, a sophomore who accepted a preferred walk-on invitation to join the team in September, picked up his first victory on the purple courts.
Jong and Maxted led 5-3 against Savan Chhabra and Ethan Scribner before play was stopped.

Singles Rundown
Fomba was the first singles player to finish for TCU. Playing at the No. 2 position, the fifth-year senior made quick work of Barranquero, 6-3-6-2. Fomba, the No. 28 ITA singles player, boosted his career singles record to 71-26.
Jong and Maxted then put TCU in front 4-0 to clinch the match.
Jong played his first match in the No. 1 singles position and looked the part, defeating Kmet via
a quick 6-3, 6-4 result.
Vives commanded the No. 5 flight and bested the Wildcats' Benjamin McDonald, 6-2, 6-4.
Maxted and Gorzny battled through brief bouts of adversity to extend TCU's margin of victory.
Gorzny, the 2022 Wimbledon Junior Doubles Champion, battled Chhabra in the No. 3 singles post. The freshman skunked his Western Athletic Conference counterpart 6-0 in the opening frame, only for Chhabra to induce a 6-6 tie in set two and force a seven-point breaker, which he claimed 6-4. Gorzny and Chhabra competed to a 3-3 gridlock to begin the decisive third set. Gorzny took control from there, winning three of the final four points to notch his first indoor singles victory.
Gorzny boosted his career singles record to 5-1. He racked up four consecutive victories on his way to the semifinals of the ITA Texas Regional in his TCU debut.
Like Gorzny, Maxted was forced to battle longer than expected. The Englishman anchored the No. 3 singles spot for the second time in his two-year TCU career. He drew the assignment of Morozov. Maxted claimed set one 6-4 and appeared on his way to a shutout, as he worked his way to a 5-4 edge in the second set. Morozov rallied to win two straight games and have Maxted staring down a third frame, Maxted, though, took care to ensure the match would not need extra time, as he forced – and won – a tiebreaker point to pick up his second singles win of 2022-23.
Swan and Rastrojo played a 10-point pro set in the No. 6 singles flight. Rastrojo won 8-2 to give ACU its lone point of the evening
