Three players received All-Tournament honors for the Horned Frogs
FORT WORTH – TCU came up just a few plays short in its bid for a signature nonconference victory and first-ever over Texas A&M on Saturday inside Schollmaier Arena.
The Aggies edged the Horned Frogs in four sets in scores of 25-19, 21-25, 17-25 and 23-25 in the finale of the annual "Fight in the Fort" preseason nonconference tournament.
The loss dips TCU's overall record to 1-4 two weeks into the 2022 campaign. The Horned Frogs secured their first win of the fall with a 3-1 triumph over Coastal Carolina on Friday before falling to Memphis earlier on Saturday.
Texas A&M swept the four-team tournament field to move to 4-2.
TCU claimed three of a possible nine sets of All-Tournament accolades.
Julia Adams, Cecily Bramschreiber and Keagan Polk teamed up to claim three of a possible 10 sets of All-Tournament accolades.
Adams led TCU with 19 kills vs. the Aggies and averaged 14 per match for the weekend. She led all players with 17 in the Horned Frogs' win over the Chanticleers.
Bramschreiber continued her return to her high school roots as an outside hitter. She nearly recorded her first double-double vs. Texas A&M with a nine-kill, nine-dig effort and amassed 40 kills over the three-match affair.
Polk has cemented herself as TCU's replacement for Dani Dennison – the program's career record holder for digs – at libero. The second-year freshman posted consecutive double-digit dig performances for the first time in her career vs. Coastal Carolina and Memphis.
The Horned Frogs heeded head coach Jason Williams' imperative to deliver a positive response following a disappointing result against the Tigers in full in set one.
TCU never trailed in the frame. Three straight kills by Adams put TCU in front 8-5. A trio of kills from the remainder of the Horned Frogs' starting front row – Audrey Nalls, Sarah Sylvester and MyKayla Myers – maintained the advantage at 12-8. Another kill down the middle via Sylvester spiked the edge to 19-13. TCU then took its largest lead of the night at seven points on two separate junctures, first at 21-15 and then 22-15. A cross-pin kill from Adams positioned TCU for match point at 24-19, which the Horned Frogs attained two plays later via an Aggie attack error.
Sylvester's starting nod was the first in her TCU career. The freshman looked right at home playing opposite the senior Myers. Sylvester, 6-3, sprinkled six kills across four sets on .455 hitting to pair with three blocks. Myers, who transferred to TCU from Washington State in 2019, landed a season-high eight kills along with a trio of blocks.
Fast starts by Texas A&M were costly in sets two and three. In the second frame, the Aggies opened up a 14-8 lead, extended the margin to six points at 18-12 and 22-16 and never let the Horned Frogs crawl within more than three points. The third frame saw TCU face 9-4 and 13-6 deficits. Texas A&M closed out the period on a 6-1 run.
TCU's resiliency was on display in set four despite being unable to push the match to a decisive fifth frame. The Horned Frogs inched their way to a 23-22 advantage in a hard-fought set that featured 12 ties and four lead changes and saw the squads combine for 32 kills. But an attack error and Texas A&M service ace following a 23-23 tie gave the Aggies the set and match.
The Aggies hit .339 in the match and were the beneficiary of 10 total blocks.
Callie Williams came one dig shy of recording her first career double at TCU. The graduate transfer dished out 41 assists and chipped in nine digs. Williams started all three matches at setter and racked up 124 assists over the course of the weekend.
Up next for the Horned Frogs is their lone road trip of nonconference play. TCU departs for Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday to begin a three-match multi-team event at North Carolina State. The Horned Frogs draw Western Carolina in the tournament-opener at 2:30 p.m. CT on Thursday before playing a doubleheader vs. Indiana and the host Wolf Pack on Friday.
