Horned Frogs open Big 12 play on Wednesday at No. 14 Baylor
FORT WORTH – TCU hit a speedbump in its nonconference finale, as the Horned Frogs fell 3-1 to Texas State on Saturday in the tournament finale of the Horned Frog Invitational.
Set scores for the match were 22-25, 25-21, 19-25 and 22-25.
TCU (5-6) and Texas State (8-4) the tournament title, as both teams posted 2-1 records over the two-day affair.
Three Horned Frogs earned All-Tournament honors following the final whistle.
Madi Cole was crowned Best Defender following a pair of standout performances against Abilene Christian, whom TCU secured in a reverse sweep versus earlier on Saturday, and the Bobcats. The 6-4 middle blocker landed seven blocks and four kills over the final three sets of TCU's come-from-behind win over the Wildcats. She subsequently earned the starting nod opposite Texas State and added two more blocks to her weekend tally.
Outside hitters Julia Adams and Zoe Hall also garnered sets of All-Tournament credentials.
Adams racked up 48 combined kills and hit over .300 in all three matches. She led TCU in the category vs. Texas State with 16 and tallied a match-high 18 in the Horned Frogs' four-set triumph over Alabama on Friday. Adams received All-Tournament recognition in each of TCU's three home matches this fall. The Plano, Texas native ranks fifth in the Big 12 in both kills per set (3.63) and points per set (4.12) ahead of the Horned Frogs' conference-opener at No. 14 Baylor on Wednesday.
Hall factored in both phases of the game, as she posted a combined stat line of 21 kills and 12 digs.
The Horned Frogs used a 6-1 run to command a 12-9 lead midway through the frame, but Texas State counterpunched with a 10-2 spurt of its own to wrest control of the set. TCU limited the Bobcats to a .107 hitting percentage but was undone by 11 combined service and reception errors.
Both teams were wildly efficient on the offensive side of the net in the second frame. TCU hit .478 – its highest hitting percentage in a set in 2022 – while Texas Stat connected at a .407 clip. Adams laced a home a trio of kills at the beginning of the set to help TCU command a 9-6 edge. The teams then played to a 13-13 tie. Adams landed a service ace following a Texas State attack error to regain the lead for good at 15-13. Mykayla Myers, who matched her career-high in blocks (10), roped two kills around a pair of Bobcat errors to inch TCU further ahead at 20-17. Adams and Hall teamed up on consecutive kills that swelled the advantage to 22-18 before TCU grabbed the set with kills on two of the final three plays courtesy of Audrey Nalls and Afedo Manyang.
Nalls joined Adams in reaching double-digit kills with 13 on a team-best .455 hitting percentage.
The mid-game momentum stalled, though, as TCU lost control of the match in the final two frames. Texas State never trailed in set three. The Bobcats transformed an 8-4 deficit into a 14-10 lead early in set four that they never relinquished.
The Bobcats concluded the match with the edge in kills (56-45), assists (53-43) and digs (40-34). TCU finished with 13 blocks. The Horned Frogs have now averaged three-or-more blocks in five of their last six outings.
First serve for TCU's match against the Lady Bears is slated for 6 p.m. on Wednesday inside the Ferrell Center.
