Horned Frogs now set to host Fight in the Fort on Sept. 2-3
FORT WORTH – A valiant effort fell short for TCU for the second straight night, as the Horned Frogs suffered a 3-0 defeat to No. 5 Minnesota in straight sets on Saturday inside Schollmaier Arena.
Set scores for the match, which concluded the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge, were 17-25, 20-25 and 17-25.
Senior Julia Adams received All-Tournament honors following the final horn. Adams amassed a combined 22 kills over the two-day affair. She led all players with 13 kills vs. No. 3 Wisconsin on Friday and landed a team-high nine vs. the Golden Gophers. The post-tournament recognition marked the seventh individual accolade Adams has earned in her four-year Horned Frog career.
TCU (0-2) and head coach Jason Williams vowed to be the aggressor and exhibit no fear of either school prior to the tournament start. Adams especially embodied the sentiment from first serve onward against the Golden Gophers.
The Plano, Texas native landed six of her nine kills in set one. Her first spike helped stake the Horned Frogs to a 2-1 edge. Adams and Cecily Bramschreiber then bookended a pair of kills around a Minnesota error to keep the hosts in front 5-4. Rotating between the pins, Adams' third kill helped keep TCU within a point of Minnesota at 11-10. Even as Minnesota gradually separated via 13-6 extended run that made the score 21-15, Adams refused to allow TCU to bow out. She tallied two kills over a four-play sequence out of a timeout to inch the Horned Frogs closer at 23-17 before Minnesota closed out the set with consecutive points.
The Golden Gophers (2-0) landed 14 kills on .417 hitting in the frame.
Progression proved palpable for the Horned Frogs even as Minnesota gradually pulled away. And in set two, it was Bramschreiber's turn to shine.
Minnesota opened up a 3-1 lead to begin. But Bramschreiber, who earned her second straight start at outside hitter, responded by landing a service ace and a kill from the left pin to get TCU back within a point at 6-5. Bramschreiber was connecting at a .429 clip on the strength of four kills at the time.
She has proven herself to be the embodiment of Williams' offensive philosophy. Bramschreiber racked up 17 kills and a team-high 15 digs over the weekend. The 5-9 sophomore nearly achieved her first career double-double on Saturday, as she finished with nine digs and eight kills.
Two Golden Gopher attack errors and the first of five blocks by Madelyn Cole then evened the scoreboard at 10 apiece. Bramschreiber's second service ace of the evening subsequently pushed TCU ahead 11-10.
The sequence was a microcosm of the back-and-forth nature of the frame. Set two featured 10 ties and six lead changes.
Cole's first kill of the 2022 campaign again propelled TCU in front, this time at 12-11. Adams found open court for the ninth time to knot the frame at 14. The teams then largely traded points to the tune of a 19-19 gridlock. Minnesota closed on a 6-1 run to assume a 2-0 match lead.
The Golden Gophers doubled up TCU 16-8 in set three to effectively ice the match.
Adams and Bramschreiber were not the only players to make individual leaps from match one to match two.
Zoe Hall continued to solidify her spot as TCU's right side hitter. She laced home seven kills on 12 swings from the pin to the tune of a .417 clip.
Midway through set three, it was a freshman's turn to take it upon herself to help the Horned Frogs play even volleyball through the final play. Jalyn Gibson tallied four kills on a match-high .800 hitting percentage after entering the match for the first time as TCU trailed 14-5.
Callie Williams and McKenzie Nichols each reached double figures in assists. Williams landed a team-high 15 assists while Nichols dished out 11 of her own.
Despite employing a noticeably smaller rotation, the Horned Frogs out-blocked Minnesota 6-5. TCU also reduced its errors tally from Friday by eight.
