
Mapaya Set for World Athletics Championships

The triple jump qualification round begins tonight at 8:20 p.m. CT
EUGENE, Ore. – Chengetayi (Du) Mapaya is set to make his World Athletics Championships debut tonight for Zimbabwe in the triple jump preliminaries. The two-time NCAA Champion will begin jumping at 8:20 p.m. CT. Athletes must hit an automatic qualifying mark of 17.05m, or at least the best 12 jumps will advance to the final.
The men's triple jump final will take place Saturday, July 23 at 8:00 p.m. CT.

Mapaya is fresh off winning his second NCAA Championship in the triple jump at Hayward Field, leaping 17.26m (56-7.50) to claim the title. The Harare, Zimbabwe, currently ranks No. 6 in the world with his championship-winning and personal-best mark of 17.26m. The 2022 outdoor triple jump runner-up and three-time NCAA Champion Emanuel Ihemeje also joins Mapaya in Group B of the qualification round.
Mapaya finished his career with the Horned Frogs as a two-time NCAA Champion, a five-time Big 12 Champion and a nine-time All-American. This season, he won his third consecutive Big 12 OTF Triple Jump Championship and also took first at the NCAA West Regional prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships
No stranger to the international stage, Mapaya won the gold medal in the triple jump at the African Junior championships prior to attending TCU, recording an African junior record 16.30m jump. In order to qualify for the championships, he jumped 16.01m to win gold at the Southern Region championships.
