Rising junior will play in the 150th Open Championship in three weeks
FORT WORTH – TCU rising junior Filippo Celli won the European Amateur Championship Saturday at Parador El Saler, Spain.
With the win, Celli earned a place at the 150th Open Championship, to be played at St. Andrews, July 14-17.
The Italian got out to a hot start on Wednesday in the first round and shot 8-under 64 to take 3-shot lead. Celli started the final round 5-under par and with a one-stroke lead. After a 3-under 69 on Saturday, Celli won the amateur with a score of 8-under 280, one-stroke better than Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (-7) of Denmark.
"I don't have too many words. I'm just feeling so happy. Really really happy" said Celli to the media in attendance. "I've been waiting to win a trophy like this all of my life, I don't have the words to describe my feelings right now."
Celli became the fourth Italian player to lift the trophy, and the third in six years after TCU grad Stefano Mazzoli in 2015 and Luca Cianchetti in 2016.
"This morning I woke up and told myself, Filippo, enjoy the day. You are living for competition and to feel under pressure and I love to feel the pressure. So I just said have fun and see what happens. And this is what happened".
Celli played in five tournaments for the Frogs in the Spring after competing in Europe at the Italian Open in September. As a freshman in 2021, Celli led TCU in three tournaments, including the Big 12 Championship, where he tied for sixth.
