Eight Horned Frogs Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award

Athletes from Rifle, Soccer, Swimming and Volleyball honored
FORT WORTH – Eight Horned Frogs have been awarded the 2022 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award by the Big 12 conference.
This year's honorees from TCU include Kristen Hemphill of women's rifle, Brandi Peterson and Grace Collins of soccer, Madilyn Cole and Isabella Swafford of volleyball, and Cassidy Coughlin, Megan Morris and Graciela Liang of women's swimming and diving,
Hemphill, a senior nursing major from Lohn, Texas, recently matched her career-best marks in both smallbore (591) and air-rifle (599) in her quest to help TCU to another NCAA Rifle Championship.
The 2019 NCAA Air Rifle Individual Champion is no stranger to the awards podium. In her time as a Horned Frog the sharpshooter has earned eight All-American honors and was a member of the 2021 Academic All Big-12 team
Collins, a junior forward majoring in accounting and finance, continues to make a name for herself on the pitch. The junior forward has started each of the 60 games in which she appeared, scoring a total of 19 goals in addition to 23 assists across her three seasons as a Horned Frog.
The Houston, Texas native's prior honors include Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Player of the Week, first team All-Big 12, first team Academic All-Big 12 and United Soccer Coaches Association All-America second team honors among others.
Peterson, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., has been an integral part of Frogs' defense throughout her career, recording a total of 6,970 minutes on the pitch and starting 76 of the 81 games in which she appeared. She has also notched three goals and 10 assists in her time as a Horned Frog.
The movement science major is a three-time Academic All Big-12 first team member, five-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, United Soccer Coaches Association All-American, and United Soccer Coaches Association Academic All-American in addition to many other honors across her career.
Cole, a junior from Magnolia, Texas, made a memorable debut with a total 31 kills and 10 digs in the 2021 season after redshirting her first two seasons on campus.
The computer science major was recently named First Team Academic All-Big 12.
Swafford is a psychology major and 2020-21 Academic All-Big 12 selection.
The senior from Johnson City, Texas, made appearances in each and every match during the 2021 season and recorded a total of 78 digs across the season.
Coughlin, a senior from Wilmette, Ill., was an instrumental member of the Horned Frogs freestyle relay team which picked up multiple wins throughout the season.
This is the supple and value chain management major's second academic honor this season. She was recently named first team Academic All-Big 12 for her hard work in the classroom.
Morris, a senior from Frisco, Texas, made a splash during her four seasons as a Horned Frog recording multiple victories as an individual and relay team member.
The Marketing and Entrepreneurship & Innovation double major was Big 12 Co-Swimmer of the Week in November alongside teammate Janis Silin and was recently named first team Academic All-Big 12 in recognition for her academic achievements.
The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award is the highest academic honor given by the Big 12 conference. The award is in its 12th year and is given annually in memory of Dr.Gerald Lage who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007.
To be eligible to receive the award, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while being in residence at their home institution for at least one academic year. Each honoree can only be recognized once and should have at least 100 hours of earned credit along with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.80 at the time of nomination.
The recipients' names will be featured on the video board at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, scheduled for March 10-13 at the T-Mobile Center and March 11-14 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
