Duggan leads furious fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime
Trailing 28-17, TCU scored 11 points in the final 7:34 of regulation to force overtime. The Wildcats won the game on a 31-yard field goal.
After Griffin Kell's second 42-yard field goal of the game trimmed the deficit to 28-20, the TCU defense forced Kansas State to punt. Max Duggan then led an 8-play, 80-yard drive to tie the game. His 8-yard keeper into the end zone came one play after his 40-yard rush. Duggan then completed a 2-point pass to Jared Wiley to even the game with 1:51 to play.
Duggan completed 18-of-36 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 110 yards on 15 carries. He became the first player with 250 yards passing and 100 rushing in a conference championship game since Deshaun Watson in the 2015 ACC title game. It was the second 100-yard rushing game of the season for Duggan and fifth of his career.
TCU started fast with a 13-play, 92 scoring drive on its opening possession, capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass from Duggan to Taye Barber. Duggan was 6-of-7 for 77 yards on the series. Key plays included a 53-yard strike from Duggan to Quentin Johnston and a 5-yard completion to Geor'Quarius Spivey on a 4th-and-3 at the Kansas State 30.
Johnston finished with 139 yards receiving on four receptions, including catches of 53 and 51 yards.
TCU took advantage of a Kansas State special teams mistake to trim an 11-point third-quarter deficit. Trent Battle recovered a muffed punt by the Wildcats, giving TCU possession at the Kansas State 30. On the first play of the ensuring series, Battle had a 21-yard reception from Duggan. Two plays later, Miller ran it in from 6 yards to make to make it a 21-17 game with 9:09 left in the third quarter.
Miller's touchdown gave him a rushing score in all 13 games this year, breaking the TCU record for the longest streak to begin a season. Pro Football Hall of Famer and TCU Board of Trustees member LaDainian Tomlinson ran for a touchdown in all 12 games in 2000. Miller's 14 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown is the longest active streak in the nation and ranks second all-time at TCU, behind only Tomlinson (15, 1999-00). Miller has a team-best 17 rushing touchdowns, fourth-most in a season at TCU.
