Can become the first pair of Horned Frogs to capture a fall national title
SAN DIEGO – Sander Jong and Lui Maxted are one win away from playing for all the marbles at the ITA National Fall Championships.
The duo defeated Virginia Tech's Ryan Fishback and Alberto Orso, 6-7, 6-2, [10-5], in the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Jong and Maxted, the No. 3 ITA doubles pairing, built a 3-2 lead in the opening frame. The Hokie pairing rallied to claim the next two points before Jong and Maxted gridlocked the scoreboard 4-4. The teams then alternated points to force a breaker point, which Fishback and Orso claimed 6-4.
Ultimately, the set one setback proved to be a blip on the radar for Jong and Maxted. The tandem won 13-of-15 first serve points and outscored the Hokies 27-15 to claim set two. They never trailed in the decisive third frame to claim the tiebreaker.
Jong and Maxted have now won eight of their last nine matches.
Saturday's semifinal match pits Jong and Maxted opposite Berk Bugarikj and Patrik Trhac of Utah.
Jong and Maxted are in pursuit of a landmark achievement for TCU men's tennis. The Horned Frogs are still searching for their first ITA National Fall champion in singles or doubles.
In singles, a spectacular fall for Jake Fearnley came to a halt. Fearnley, the preseason ITA No. 65 singles player, was defeated in straight sets by Eliot Spizziri of Texas, 6-2, 7-6.
Fearnley is trending toward a special 2022-23 season. The junior racked up an 11-2 singles record across three fall tournaments. He won 21-of-28 sets played. Fearnley won the Battle in the Bay Classic singles title en route to an ATP Challenger Tour wild card. He punctuated his autumn surge with a semifinal run at the ITA Texas Regional and Friday's quarterfinal appearance.
