TCU is one of two programs with multiple athletes left competing
SAN DIEGO – TCU reaffirmed its placement atop the men's tennis hierarchy on Thursday on day two of the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Jake Fearnley, Sander Jong and Lui Maxted each punched their tickets to the quarterfinals of the grand finale of fall tennis with round of 16 victories.
Fearnley advanced in the singles bracket while Jong and Maxted are one of eight doubles pairings still playing.
With the results, TCU is one of just two programs with multiple athletes still competing in the main singles and doubles draws.
Fearnley ran his fall singles record to 11-1 with a three-set triumph over Alabama's Enzo Aguiard. He outlasted Aguiard 7-5 in the opening frame. Aguiard rallied to claim the second set 6-4. Fearnley, though, took control late in the decisive third frame. He took the lead for good at 4-3, then locked up the match with victories in two of the final three games to snare a 6-4 set win.
Fearnley, the No. 65 ITA singles player, will have to get past No. 4 seed Eliot Spizziri of Texas to secure his spot in Saturday's semifinals. A win over Spizziri, No. 35 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, would be Fearnley's third consecutive victory and fourth of the fall over an ITA top-75 foe.
Jong and Maxted are peaking at the right time. The duo eased by Duke's Andrew Zhang and Michael Heller in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Jong and Maxted, who were tabbed third in the preseason ITA doubles rankings, have won seven of their last eight matches dating back to the ITA Texas Regional on Oct. 13-18.
Their quarterfinal assignment is Virginia Tech's Ryan Fishback and Alberto Orso.
A win on Friday would mark Jong and Maxted's second straight semifinals appearance. They posted a runner-up finish in the doubles championship of the ITA Texas Regional.
