SAN DIEGO – TCU is shipping on to the round of 16 of the ITA Fall National Championships.
Jake Fearnley, Sander Jong and Lui Maxted all notched opening day victories in the five-day culmination of the fall intercollegiate tennis season, held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Fearnley, the No. 65 ITA singles player, eased his way past No. 75 Gavin Young of Michigan, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the round of 32 of the main singles draw on Wednesday.
The Scotland native is now 10-1 in singles play through three fall tournaments. Fearnley's round of 16 opponent is Alabama's Enzo Aguiard. The match is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. CT on Thursday.
Jong and Maxted battled through some unanticipated adversity to advance. They squared off with an upstart pairing of Vishwa Aduru and James Hopper of Case Western Reserve University. Jong and Maxted, who boast the No. 3 ITA doubles ranking, blew by the duo 6-3 in the opening set, only to drop the second frame 3-6 and set up a 10-point tiebreaker. The teams alternated points early in the game before Jong and Maxted asserted control late to snag a 10-8 breaker win.
They now face Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang of Duke on Thursday.
