Big plays on offense and big stops on defense key the victory in Morgantown
TCU's five touchdowns were at least 29 yards, while the defense has now allowed just one second-half touchdown in its last three games.
Leading 28-24, TCU's defense came up huge. As the Mountaineers went for it on 4th-and-goal at the 4, Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson closely defended the pass in the end zone to turn the ball over on downs.
TCU responded with a 14-play, 84-yard possession to extend its lead to 31-24 on a Griffin Kell 30-yard field goal with 13:03 to play. Duggan's 11-yard completion to Quentin Johnston on a 4th-and-3 at the West Virginia 20 kept the drive alive, which was keyed by a 57-yard reception by Savion Williams.
Following a 46-yard field goal by Kell, now 8-of-8 on the season, the Mountaineers cut the deficit to 34-31 and had the ball with 3:56 left with a chance to tie the game. However, TCU forced a 3-and-out. The Horned Frogs took over at midfield and sealed the game when Duggan found Williams in the end zone on a 4th-and-1 at the 29 with 20 seconds remaining.
After West Virginia tied the game at 21-21 with 1:35 to play in the first half, TCU immediately answered. Emani Bailey's 30-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left in the second quarter capped a 7-play, 73-yard drive and gave TCU a 28-21 halftime lead it would not relinquish.
TCU took its first lead of the game, at 21-14, after a takeaway. Hodges-Tomlinson forced a fumble on a corner blitz with Lwal Uguak making the recovery. On the first snap of the ensuing series, Kendre Miller broke free up the middle for a 51-yard touchdown with seven minutes left in the first half.
Miller has a rushing score in all eight games, the second-longest streak to begin a season in TCU history. TCU Board of Trustees member LaDainian Tomlinson ran for a touchdown in all 12 games in 2000.
Miller finished with 120 yards on just 12 carries for his fifth 100-yard effort in the last six games.
