TCU Stuns Kansas with Reverse Sweep to Match Best-Ever Mark in Big 12 Play
10/26/2022 11:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Horned Frogs have won three straight and four of their last five contests
FORT WORTH – At this point in the 2022 season, it'd be shortsighted to proclaim TCU volleyball to be out of any match, no matter how dire the straits may appear.
TCU rallied yet again from a 2-0 deficit to stun Kansas in a five-set thriller, 17-25, 12-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 15-9 on Wednesday in a Big 12 affair inside Schollmaier Arena.
In the process, the Horned Frogs avenged a sweep suffered at the hands of the Jayhawks just two weeks earlier in the Sunflower State.
The win signified TCU's second reverse sweep in its last three outing and third of the fall. The Horned Frogs also extended their unbeaten record in five-setters to 5-0.
TCU has now won three straight and four of its last five contests.
In a season chock full of come-from-behind wins – TCU has trailed in eight of its 11 victories – Wednesday's rally may very well have been the most satisfying of the bunch.
TCU (11-9, 6-3 Big 12) matched the 2015 squad for best start to Big 12 play in school history with the result.
The Horned Frogs wrested sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings away from Kansas (15-6, 5-4 Big 12). They can move into a tie for second place with a win over Iowa State (15-7, 7-2 Big 12) in the teams 6:30 p.m. matchup on Friday in Ames. TCU defeated the Cyclones 3-1 on Sept. 24 in the first-of-two meetings this season between the teams.
The comeback was without question a boon to the Horned Frogs' prospects of securing the program's first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament since 2016. Kansas entered the game ranked No. 21 in the NCAA RPI. Four of the Horned Frogs' last five wins have come against teams featured in the top-70 of the rankings.
Any thoughts of the Big Dance, though, were far from the collective conscience through the first two sets. Kansas never trailed in either set, landing a combined 25 kills on .444 hitting.
But in set three, TCU regained control of the net and from there, turned the match on its ear. The Horned Frogs lit up the Jayhawks for 37 kills against just four errors for a combined .458 hitting percentage over the final three frames. TCU also notched eight blocks, helping limit the Jayhawks to just eight kills per set and two blocks total.
Audrey Nalls again proved to be the most dominant outside hitter on the court, leading all players with 22 kills. The performance marked her sixth 20-plus kill match of the season. TCU is now 5-1 when Nalls, a two-time recipient of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week accolades, exceeds 20 kills.
Nalls had a partner in crime. Before the match, head coach Jason Williams implored the Horned Frogs outside hitters to take control of the pins. Freshman Jalyn Gibson delivered on the imperative.
She finished with a career-best 15 kills – more than any other Jayhawk – against a .367 hitting clip. Gibson also led all players with seven blocks. The San Antonio native has started TCU's last three matches at outside hitter, averaging 10.7 kills per contest in that stretch.
Callie Williams fed both players all evening. She dished out a match-high 46 assists to pair with a team-best 13 digs to notch her fifth straight double-double and seventh of the fall.
Gibson proved particularly potent in set three. She racked up seven kills on eight swings for an .875 hitting percentage to help TCU begin clawing its way back. Collectively, the Horned Frogs laced home 13 kills against just one error while stuffing four Jayhawk attacks.
TCU doubled up Kansas 6-3 behind two of Gibson's kills and an ace by libero Sabrina Sustala (9 digs, 4 assists). The Horned Frogs stretched the lead to 14-8, bookending the sequence with two blocks by Mykayla Myers and another kill via Gibson's right arm. TCU tallied seven kills on .638 hitting to assume its six-point lead. Gibson's 10th kill of the night maintained kept TCU ahead by a half-dozen points at 20-14. Two more unanswered points then forced the Jayhawks to burn their final timeout. A block by Zoe Hall gave TCU its largest lead of the night at 24-15. Gibson's seventh-and-final kill of the frame sewed up set point two plays later.
Nalls was the leader of the offensive onslaught that was set four. TCU hit .500 – its best percentage in a set this fall – with 15 kills, eight of which came from Nalls. The Horned Frogs also passed at a .520 clip.
The teams alternated points to an 8-8 deadlock to begin. From there, the tide turned in full. TCU scored six of the next seven points via three kills – two by Julia Adams and one from Gibson – and three Jayhawk errors to assume a 14-9 lead. Nalls later fueled a 4-0 run by sandwiching a trio of kills around an ace by McKenzie Nichols to widen the lead to 20-12. The Jayhawks gifted TCU three of its ensuing four points on errors to make the score 24-16. Williams dropped in an ace to secure set point and transform the match into a first-to-15-wins affair.
Set five was never really in doubt. TCU never trailed. The Horned Frogs had nine kill against a .471 hitting percentage while using three blocks to help stifle the Jayhawks to a .045 mark.
Myers, who finished the match with seven kills on .385 hitting, found open court on the first play of the set. TCU gained its first bit of separation at 3-1 following a Jayhawk arrack error and Gibson's final kill of the evening. Hall then carried TCU into the halfway mark. The sophomore landed a block to make the score 6-2, then inched TCU further ahead at 8-3 via consecutive kills. Nichols chimed in with a well-placed dump kill to stymie a 3-1 Kansas scoring spurt and keep TCU comfortably in front 10-6. Two more kills from Myers put TCU on the precipice of victory at 13-8. A service error on the following play set TCU up for match point. Nalls' final spike of the evening from the back row punctuated the comeback.
TCU earned their first win over the Jayhawks since 2018.
The Horned Frogs have won seven of their last eight home matches dating back to Sept. 16.
TCU's next home contest is set for 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 against No. 2 Texas.
