
Horned Frogs Come Up Short in Chance for Season Sweep of Iowa State

TCU now returns home to host No. 2 Texas on Wednesday
AMES – A chance for a season sweep of Iowa State slipped through the cracks on Friday for TCU, as the Horned Frogs dropped a four-set match to the Cyclones, 25-27, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, on Friday in Hilton Coliseum.
The loss halted a three-game winning streak for the Horned Frogs (11-10, 6-4 Big 12).
TCU was held to 49 kills – its fewest in a four-set match in Big 12 play – against a .153 hitting percentage. The Horned Frogs were out-blocked 12-7.
The offensive struggles – TCU averaged 60.7 kills per match in its last three outings – were a microcosm of a frustrating evening. The Horned Frogs limited Iowa State to 51 kills of its own on .203 hitting. The Cyclones (16-7, 8-2 Big 12) averaged 11 kills per set over the final three periods. The teams finished the match even in assists (46-46).
Ill-timed miscues hurt the Horned Frogs. TCU led by four-or-more points in sets one and four. The Horned Frogs had 46 combined errors. TCU committed four service errors compared to zero for Iowa State in the opening frame – a set they led as late as 22-20. Set four saw TCU open an 18-14 lead only for the Horned Frogs attack to go cold. TCU landed just two kills the rest of the way and finished the frame hitting -.053.
Mykayla Myers landed a career-best 13 kills behind a .667 hitting percentage to lead all players. Julia Adams joined her in double figures with 12.
Callie Williams recorded her sixth consecutive double-double and eighth of the 2022 campaign with a 38-assist, 11-dig effort.
Williams finished with the match-high in assists and was one of four Horned Frogs to tally double digit digs. Sabrina Sustala matched her career high (20). Audrey Nalls matched Williams with 11 while McKenzie Nichols chipped in 10.

The Horned Frogs appeared poised to win their fourth consecutive set against the Cyclones in set one. TCU scored the match's first four points and used a 5-0 run to increase the lead to 11-6 and force Iowa State into timeout. Nalls landed a kill and an ace on consecutive plays before Adams punctuated the run with a kill of her own.
Iowa State, though, began doubling off Nalls, who entered the contest averaging 19.3 kills per match in Big 12 play, at the left pin. The Cyclones soon counterpunched with a 7-2 run to gridlock the scoreboard 13-13.
A trio of kills by Myers, Jalyn Gibson and Zoe Hall helped TCU regain its edge at 18-16. TCU was out-hitting Iowa State .333-.185 at the time.
The Cyclones then scored four straight points to assume their first lead of the night. Hall answered back with two straight kills to even thing at 20-20. Nalls gave back TCU the lead one final time off an ace on a perfectly placed ball on the right corner if the court between the libero and setter.
Iowa State regained the lead 23-20. TCU staved off match point three times, alternating points to the tune of a 25-25 tie. The Cyclones claimed the set two plays later off a kill and a block.
The Cyclones separated from TCU in set two via an 8-0 run to double up the Horned Frogs 16-8. TCU cut the lead down to two at 19-17, but Iowa State used another decisive run to put the Horned Frogs in a 2-0 hole, scoring six of the final eight points in the set.
TCU hit .281 to Iowa State's .111 clip in set three. The Horned Frogs never trailed outside of a 2-1 blip.
