Horned Frogs turn their attention to Saturday showdown at Kansas State
LAWRENCE – TCU hit a speed bump on the first leg of its two-step through the Sunflower State, falling to Kansas in straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20, on Wednesday inside the Horejsi Family Athletic Center.
Kansas (13-5, 3-3 Big 12) controlled the net throughout the match. The Jayhawks tallied 44 kills on .301 hitting while holding TCU to a .144 clip. Kansas hit above .300 in sets one and three. TCU (8-9, 3-3 Big 12) was out-blocked for just the third time in its last nine outings, as Kansas finished with nine rejection's to TCU's two.
Callie Williams was a bright spot on a tough evening. She paired 27 assists with a match-high 16 digs to register her second straight double-double and fourth of the fall.
Zoe Hall, Mykayla Myers and Audrey Nalls finished with eight kills apiece.
Myers led all players in hitting percentage (.438). The senior has connected at-or-above .400 on six occasions midway through the 2022 campaign.
Set one saw Kansas land eight kills through the game's first 19 plays. The Jayhawks finished the frame with a 17-8 edge in the category. Kansas snapped a 5-5 gridlock via a 7-2 run to build a 12-7 lead. The Horned Frogs drew within three points at 13-10, but the Jayhawks countered with a 5-1 spurt to swell their lead to 18-11, then took their largest lead of the night at 23-15.
TCU and Kansas played to a 13-13 tie at the midway point in set two. Two Jayhawk scoring spurts again stymied TCU's momentum. Kansas scored four straight points out of the media timeout to go in front 17-13. TCU cut the deficit down to two points at 18-16, only for Kansas score on four of the next five plays. TCU committed three errors in the sequence. The Horned Frogs nearly evened the scoreboard at one apiece, clawing within one point at 24-23 before a Jayhawk kill thwarted the rally.
The Horned Frogs' best shot at claiming a set proved to be the third-and-final frame. TCU jumped out to a 6-3 advantage. Hall's final kill of the match squared the score 9-9. Freshman Sarah Sylvester laced home three kills and a block in the middle portion of the set to keep TCU within striking distance at 19-16. Attack errors proved costly once more, as TCU had four on Kansas' final six scoring plays.
TCU out-dug the Jayhawks 52-51.
The Horned Frogs now make the 90-minute bus ride west to face Kansas State at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Manhattan. A win over the Wildcats would stake TCU to its first 4-3 start to Big 12 play since 2015.
