TCU plays a tiebreaker with Georgia Tech Monday at 9:30 a.m. CT
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – A birdie by sophomore Aymeric Laussot on TCU's final hole placed the Horned Frogs into a tiebreaker scenario as the third round concluded Sunday at the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
TCU trailed Georgia Tech by one stroke for 15th place as Laussot approached his final hole, the par-4 No. 9. A 2 iron and a pitching wedge left 18 feet for birdie. He sank the putt to the roar of the rest of the Horned Frogs watching green side.
"It was the most clutch putt I've ever seen," said TCU head coach Bill Montigel. "I'm really happy for Ricki and for our entire team for the chance to play another day here."
The tie will be settled Monday at 9:30 a.m. CT between TCU (+32) and Georgia Tech (+32). It will be a sudden-death playoff counting all five scores. Each player will play one hole. Playoff holes are No. 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Players will play the numbered position they held at the start of the tournament.
The team that advances will continue on with a fourth round of stroke play starting at noon CT on Monday.
Laussot continues to have an outstanding week as his birdie lowered his final score to an even-par 70. He moved up 17 spots into a tie for 28th place at 4-over 214. Even if TCU fails to advance as a team, Laussot will play a fourth round of stroke play by being in the top nine of a non-qualifying team.
Mateo Fernández de Oliveira put together his third-straight round of 3-over 73. He moved to 9-over 219 and a tie for 67th place.
Filippo Celli had one of three birdies on No. 9 for TCU. He shot 3-over 73 for the round and moved into a tie for 90th at 11-over 221.
Jacob Skov Olesen had the other birdie on nine. His 130-yard shot out of the fairway bunker left him a five-foot putt for birdie. Olesen had the second-best round of the day at 1-over 71. He and Gustav Frimodt are tied for 102nd place at 13-over 223.
