Smith fans 10 for the Horned Frogs
OKLAHOMA CITY – TCU scored twice in the first and never looked back as it advanced in the winner's bracket of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 7-2 win over Texas Tech Friday morning at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Russell Smith fanned 10 over six innings of work.
The Rundown
Russell Smith (7-3) was outstanding in his six innings on the mound. He faced more than four batters just once. Twice he worked around a lead-off walk, retiring three straight to strand the runners at first. After allowing a two-run home run in the fifth, he fanned three straight to end the inning. He finished his outing with 10 strikeouts, allowed just three hits and walked three.
Back-to-back doubles from Porter Brown and Zach Humphreys had the Frogs off and running in the first. Hunter Wolfe made it a 2-0 ballgame with a sacrifice fly.
In the third, TCU pushed across two unearned runs to build a 4-0 lead. With runners on the corners, Wolfe reached on an infield single to drive in his second run of the game. An errant throw on the play allowed Brayden Taylor to score from first.
TCU added a run on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Frogs scored twice in the eighth on a Gray Rodgers base hit and a bases loaded walk to Elijah Nunez as the lead grew to five, 7-2.
In the eighth, a one out error and a walk brought the tying run to the plate for Texas Tech. Haylen Green came on and got a grounder and a strikeout to end the inning. He worked around a lead-off single in the ninth to lock up his 12thsave of the season.
Garrett Wright gave the Frogs a solid relief outing, striking out three and issuing just one walk in 1 1/3 innings.
