The Horned Frogs have won two-straight matches in Norman for the first time in program history.
NORMAN, Okla. -- TCU volleyball showcased its depth and versatility in a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma inside McCasland Field House on Saturday evening. The Horned Frogs dominated play in the clutch moments to earn a 2-0 sweep over Oklahoma this weekend.
"I'm proud of our team for the resilience and resolve they've shown through the course of the year," head coach Jill Kramer said. "This is the first time that it really feels like we've found our identity and used that to our advantage to get the wins. Our team prepared well all week. We made it a point to cut down on errors and still make big plays and today was a good example of that. There are parts of the game that each player has been working on throughout the spring and we're seeing that come together more down the stretch."
The TCU block has been a staple over the last four matches. The Frogs finished with 12 today, thanks to career-highs from MyKayla Myers (seven) and Afedo Manyang (five). TCU has delivered 10 or more blocks in three of its last four matches.
TCU NOTABLES:
· The Horned Frogs collected six aces in four sets tonight, the seventh time they have recorded more than one ace per set this season, they are 3-4 when doing so.
· Five different Horned Frogs registered at least seven kills: Katie Clark (14) Julia Adams (14), Afedo Manyang (10), Audrey Nalls (8) and MyKayla Myers (7).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TCU, 28-26): The first set was a back and forth affair, 14 ties and eight lead changes headlined the frame as the Horned Frogs pulled it out in extra points. Coach Kramer called a timeout, down 16-18, spurring a 5-1 run to put the Frogs in the driver's seat, 21-19, but OU responded, fighting off a set point to tie the score, 24-24. Oklahoma earned two set points in the coming points, but Clark refused to lose, dropping three kills to put the Frogs in front, 27-26, allowing Nalls to win the set with an ace. Clark led the offense with six kills and three blocks in the set. Georgiades delivered five digs in the back row and Nichols tallied 15 assists.
Set 2 (OU, 25-18): The Sooners jumped in front, 8-1, and managed to hold that seven-point advantage for a majority of the set. The TCU offense bounced back later in the set with more consistent play but the damage was done and Oklahoma tied the match. Myers, Clark, Nalls and Manyang each tallied multiple kills as Georgiades delivered seven digs.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-21): After struggling with the OU defense for the first two sets, Adams came alive for the Horned Frogs in the third, racking up eight kills, including three in a row to help the Frogs on a 5-0 run, erasing another 18-16 deficit to go in front, 21-18. The Frogs learned from their first set and finished off Oklahoma in order, with strong defense and another timely ace, this time from Nichols. Manyang and Myers combined for a block to salt away the set, 25-21. Adams led the offense with her eight kills. Manyang was a dominant force at the net, delivering three blocks, wheil Bella Swafford anchored the back row with four digs.
Set 4 (TCU, 25-20): The Frogs used an 11-2 run in the middle of the fourth set to go in front 17-8. Nalls was the catalyst on offense, posting three kills in that run. Oklahoma tried to stifle the momentum at the 10-6 mark with a timeout but Georgiades delivered a timely ace in the first point out of the break to ensure momentum stayed on TCU's side. The Sooners tried to make a frantic comeback in the final points but Nalls' fifth kill of the set finished the job, giving TCU the weekend sweep and wins in three of its last four matches.
