Fomba and Fearnley post 2-0 days to lead TCU to its seventh road win of the year
PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 5 TCU men's tennis (11-5) delivered another strong performance on the road to defeat Stanford, 4-1, on Friday afternoon in Stanford, Calif. Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley led the way, winning both their doubles and singles matches in the win.
"I'm very proud of the team for overcoming a very tough challenge," head coach David Roditi said. "We have asked a lot from our players with our schedule. Guys had to move up and play higher than they are used to and players had to jump in and compete. Playing at Stanford is always special and I believe that helped our guys get fired up. Due to Covid It's been very hard for Stanford to get into competition mode and be able to prepare for the level they are used to. I hope they can get going and be able to compete at the level they are capable. They have great coaches and very good players. Very good wins for Fomba, Fearnley and Martín in singles and a huge doubles point for Kurzban and Jirousek. We get some rest and get ready to play our Big 12 schedule."
This was TCU's seventh road win of the season, the most since the Elite 8 team of 2016.
TCU fought for victories from two doubles pairings playing together for the first time. Tomas Jirousek, regularly a singles only player, was thrust into doubles play at No. 3 with Fomba while Max Kurzban, making his third dual doubles start, was paired with Fearnley at No. 2. Both players showed no signs of discomfort, helping TCU clinch the all-important road doubles point.
Fomba, playing in his first match since receiving his career-high No. 10 singles ranking, was unbreakable at No. 1 singles, holding serve in all 10 games to take down Stanford's No. 1: 6-4, 6-4.
