Frogs score five in the eighth
FORT WORTH – TCU used a big eighth inning to break open a tight ballgame and evened the series with a 7-1 win over Gonzaga on Saturday at Lupton Stadium. Zach Humphreys, Phillip Sikes and Tommy Sacco each drove in two in the victory.
The Rundown
Russell Smith (3-0) and Haylen Green proved to be the shutdown duo the Horned Frogs needed to even the series. Smith went six innings, allowing a run on five hits. He tallied four strikeouts. Green pitched the final three innings to pick up his second save of the year. He allowed just two hits and struck out two.
The Frogs got the scoring started early, picking up two runs in the first. Luke Boyers singled with one out and stole second. After a walk to Brayden Taylor, Zach Humphreys doubled to left to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Smith worked round base runners in each of the first three innings, but found his groove in the middle frames. He retired eight in a row before allowing a one-out double in the sixth. Andrew Orzel beat out a double play ball to drive in the Bulldogs lone run of the game.
TCU picked up five big runs in the eighth to give itself plenty of breathing room. A bunt single from Humphreys started a string of seven straight batters to reach base. With two runners in scoring position, Phillip Sikes double to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Gray Rodgers followed with an RBI-double. After Bobby Goodloe walked, Tommy Sacco dumped a base hit into center to drive in the final two runs of the game.
