FORT WORTH – TCU Volleyball earned a set point in the fourth set, but couldn't force a fifth, falling to No. 6 Baylor, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 16-26, 24-26) on Friday night inside Schollmaier Arena. TCU hit 55 kills, the most in program history against Baylor in a four-set match, but ultimately came up short on the home court.
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (BU, 25-21): TCU came out of the gates playing fast and playing well. The Horned Frogs spread the ball around well throughout the entire set, with the only downside to the set coming from service errors. Both teams traded points until 15-15, when TCU made three service errors over the next eight points to allow BU a 20-18 advantage. The Bears showed their No. 6 ranking by putting away the set, late, despite TCU out hitting, out blocking and out digging Baylor. Manyang led the offense with three kills in a set where six Horned Frogs recorded terminations. Raiola led the back row with four digs while Myers and Adams each recorded a pair of blocks. TCU outhit Baylor .174 to .100, out-dug BU 8-6, out-blocked Baylor 3.5-1, but gave up four more service errors and Baylor took a one-set lead.
Set 2 (TCU, 25-19): TCU took a major step forward in the second set, eliminating the errors, playing strong defense and racking up 20 kills to hand Baylor its second-most lopsided set loss of the season, second only to No. 1 Texas last week. Great serving from Dennison allowed TCU to go on a 9-2 run, going in front, 17-11. TCU never allowed Baylor within three points from that moment on as Manyang salted away the set with three-straight errors, giving TCU a 24-18 lead. Raiola led the offense with seven kills on .357 hitting, Manyang finished with four kills to go along with five from Adams as TCU dominated the pins. Once again, TCU out-hit Baylor (.385 - .242) and out-dug BU 14-9. Nichols recorded 14 assists while also leading the back row with four digs.
Set 3 (BU, 25-16): Baylor bounced back with sustained runs in the later stages of the set, taking a 9-9 score and winning the set by nine. TCU only managed two points off its own serving during the set as BU went ahead by a set once more. Raiola and Adams ended up with four kills each. Raiola also led the defense with three digs.
Set 4 (BU, 26-24): The Horned Frogs kept up with the No. 6 Bears right until the bitter end as Manyang matched former AVCA Player of the Year Yossiana Pressley kill for kill in a thrilling set of volleyball. Neither team led by more than three points throughout the set. Baylor got the run when it mattered most though, overcoming a set point for TCU, 24-23, to win three points in a row and claim the set in extra points. Manyang recorded six kills on seven swings (.857 hitting) while Zoe Hall added two blocks as TCU left it all on the court.
UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs (8-13, 2-9) will take on No. 6 Baylor (15-5, 9-2) once again tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. inside Schollmaier Arena.
