TCU – IOWA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 34, IOWA STATE 37
SEPTEMBER 26, 2020
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson:
On the quarterback decision:
"The offense talked and they just felt like they wanted to switch. I thought Max (Duggan) started slow and just got better as he went on. We needed a guy who could scramble and run, that is what you have to do when they drop eight."
On Iowa State's big plays:
"You can't play our defense and not be accountable in what you want to do. Iowa State is a team that is going to move you around and get you in oppositions and you have got to be able to play leverage. Missed tackles, we have got to do a better job than that. The way we press, if you don't cover over the top, you are going to have a problem."
On today being the first game:
"We don't make excuses. Obviously, we would have been better on both sides of the ball because you know what you have. Today we didn't have it and we had to play better. We also had more time to prepare, if we don't change some of the things we do, the result is not going to be any better. There is only one guy to blame, I am supposed to be the guy to get them ready and today I didn't do that."
On the young players on the team:
"We have talked about the freshman class and having them run in and make things happen. I think you are going to see a bunch of players as they get better in the offense. I was happy with the wide receivers; we just can't go backwards. Now we have got to get a lot better. I am sure I will know a lot more after I watch some film."
On the offensive line:
"To be honest, we have to better against a three-man rush. We are going up against a four-man rush next week. You have to give Iowa State some credit, they have some pretty good players. We have a week to prepare though and there is a lot to do between now and then for us to get these guys better."
On TCU making the game close:
"We came to play. You have to play to win. That's what they did when I came here 23 years ago. You have to get ready for the games you are supposed to win, let the big games play themselves out. For two years in a row, Iowa State has had our number. We have to do a lot better job against a lot more physical teams."
On the creative offensive scheme:
"We had a couple of weeks to get ready. I think the tempo got them a little bit. Our lost touchdown they got a little lost and that's what you want, when people don't think. Same thing with what they did to us. You got to get lined up and ready to play."
TCU Running Back Emari Demercado
On the addition of Max Duggan in the 2nd half:
"Everybody came more fired up in the second half and we were able to make more plays. Guys were getting inside of it and we were finally getting some momentum going. This just led to us making more and more plays."
On going straight into Big 12 play without a non-conference game first:
"Yes, it is definitely different going straight into Big 12 play. You don't have your games to get all your kinks worked out. We were thrown right into the fire and had to figure it out on the fly. We had a lot of time to prepare, but unfortunately things didn't fall our way."
On improvements for the offense:
"Just not shooting ourselves in the foot. We keep playing behind the chains and that affected us a lot. 3rd and 20, 3rd and 22, 24, those are holding us back. We are making plays; we are getting 10 to 12 yards. It is 3rd and 20 which isn't doing anything for us, so we have to punt the ball away. We just have to stop hindering ourselves and we will be fine without that."
On TCU's running back game:
"I think the potential is to be one of the best in the country. We get all of those guys to grow up, come in and contribute day in and day out. I think we can be one of the best running back groups in the country."
TCU Linebacker Garret Wallow
On the frustrations of giving up big plays and what must happen moving forward:
"I just think we have to play better as a defense. It really came down to five plays and those five plays really hurt us. It all really comes down to execution. We really hurt ourselves with those five plays which is why the score went up on us. As a defense we can't give away any easy plays and we need to find ways to get more turnovers and get the ball in the hands of our offense."
On if fumble return for touchdown seemed as if game would turn in TCU's favor:
"As a defense, our key goal is to get take-aways. You want to get the ball in the offenses hands as much as possible. I definitely thought it brought some energy, but at the end of the day we have to execute more as a defense and play better."
On positives that can be taken away from this game:
"One positive is that it's our first game, so, it's been a while since we've played a game. Coming in to this game, you're always going to learn what you have, what you need to get stronger at and learn what you need to get better at and that is a positive that you can take away from the first game of any year. Moving forward, we need to watch the film, see what we can get better at and execute better and get ready for next week."
On defensive breakdown on long runs by Iowa State:
"We come to the sideline and talk about those plays and talk about what exactly happened. At the end of the day, it comes down to one simple thing, which is execution. Like I said, we all have to play better, we all have to tackle better. It's the first game, I'm not letting anything go, but we definitely need to play better and come tomorrow ready to work and ready to get better. Get better at the little things like tackling, execution, playing our defense how it's supposed to be played. Those little things are going to take us a long way. When you see the breakdown of those plays and you see what happened and went wrong and you see what you can get better at moving forward."
Iowa State Head Coach Matt Campbell
On the game:
"I'm really proud of our football team. I liked the growth from week one to week two. We have a lot of work to do obviously as we saw today. It was a good road win and a good opportunity to get ourselves started in league play."
On defensive end JaQuan Bailey:
"I really thought he played a phenomenal game last week. I thought he was truly outstanding in the game. You hoped you senior, building off a senior year with the work ethic he's put in, he's off to a really good start. I couldn't be prouder of him, what he stands for and what he's doing and I think showing how talented he truly is."
On the growth from week one to week two:
"Well we can practice. In football you have to be able to practice. We had a lot of guys out early in fall camp. In week one it was really the second week of fall camp for a lot of them. We could have taken the easy way out and not played or you could have played and figure out who you were. I thought that was huge for us. We had the ability to go back as the head coach and make some adjustments and really nail in what our personnel is and help us adjust ourselves."
On running back Breece Hall:
"Breece is super talented. I think he took some of the areas where he needed to get better in the first week and get better. In an area like the running game, when you're cautious early, I think it just takes time. So, you saw some really good growth there against an elite run defense. Breece was outstanding today and Kene Nwangwo was outstanding as well."
On quarterback Brock Purdy's fumble that was returned for a TCU touchdown:
"I just think that's part of his growth process. We had some long talks about that over the last two weeks. When you get to be a veteran football player, situational football, understanding that sometimes at quarterback, making the best play is making the right play. Knowing how our defense is playing. Understanding the lead. All those kinds of things. What I love about Brock is what I love about all great players is they want to make a play to try and win the game, but sometimes the best play is to pull the ball down. I thought he did some really good things like that as the game went on.
Iowa State Defensive End JaQuan Bailey
On having trouble locating the ball:
"It was just like a boom-boom play. I was just focusing on closing out of the half and the play just kind of happened. Coach C (Matt Campbell) and Coach (Jon) Heacock had been preaching to us the whole week about turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. And then so, I was able to come out and get the one and Mike Rose was able to come up with the first one they had so the game late in the fourth. So, kudos to Mike Rose."
On where they've gotten better since two weeks ago:
"Just as a team, coming together as one. Honing in on our crafts and coming to work every day and taking one day at a time. Just taking care of the small things and coming to practice every day."
On his mother's reaction to his big play and if he has talked to her yet:
"No sir. As soon as I came off the field, Coach Skip and them grabbed me off the field. As soon as I'm done with y'all I'm calling my queen first, mama dukes."
Iowa State Running Back Breece Hall
On walking through his first touchdown run:
"We were just running an inside zone play. Someone split flow and I noticed that the linebackers were playing front side then going back side, so I just tried to play with them a little bit and I got one of the linebackers to bite on it and go inside and I just broke it outside and Sean Shaw and Xavier Hutchinson got some great blocks for me so that helped me out a lot."
On having trouble moving the ball and opening things up for the rest of the game:
"Yeah, I felt like after that we got really comfortable and started calling a lot of stuff and it was working. So, I could not run, and that just gave us a spark. Our defense really helped us out as well with them getting stops and just staying consistent."
On what he saw on Kene Nwangwu's long run:
"It was a pistol split flow play and, you know, Kene's a beast, so I just saw him come out the hole and beat the corner to the outside and then he was gone. I got a lot of confidence in Kene, so once he gets through the D-Line he can be gone at any time."
On what this victory means going forward for Iowa State:
"I felt like it was just a huge statement win and gave us a lot of confidence. We really wanted to come and kind of bounce back off of our week one loss and I feel like today we kind of put a lot of things together. There's a lot of good and some bad, so I feel like our team played really good as a whole."
On how they played better today compared to previous game, especially in the second half:
"I felt like we came out with more energy and everybody was cheering on everybody and it was a really good atmosphere. To play in front of the TCU fans fired us up and pissed us off a little bit and made us want to keep putting up points and being consistent."
Iowa State Quarterback Brock Purdy
On the keys to breaking off big plays today:
"Finally, we just all clicked in all aspects. Receivers were able to make plays. Offensive line did their job. Running backs, Breece did his thing, Kene did his thing. So I think when we're all able to do our job, we're able to have big plays like that happen. It was sweet seeing everything finally click together."
On what this victory means going forward for Iowa State:
"I think it's a lot of confidence. Just for the team as a whole, it's a big conference play, so that was huge. And I think we could just learn from things we didn't do well. I know coaches will do a great job with that and players will do a great job responding. The confidence part of winning this game on the road for the first time opening up conference play is huge. We're going to just build off of that."
On feeling improvement since the last game:
"This is what we saw on the off season as far as making plays and fall camp and everything like that. So being able to execute and be precise on drives like that and finish drives when we got good field position. These are things we expect one another to do and we expect our offense to be like this. So it was nice to see that today."
