FORT WORTH — Mariah Castillo was named MileSplitCA's Greatest Combination Girls Distance Runner of the Decade.
Castillo, a 2018 graduate of Saugus High School, is the No. 8 performer in California state history for 1600 meters and the No. 15 performer in CA annals for 3200 meters. She also had the sixth ranked 1600m/3200m combination between 2010 and 2019.
On top of that, Castillo also dropped down to run a fast enough 800 meters that her combined 800m/3200m time ranked third among all girls in the past decade, and her 800m/1600m combined time ranked eighth.
According to MileSplitCA, the poll tournament began with 32 ladies who competed at California high schools between 2010 and 2019. Participants were selected based primarily on 1600m/3200m combined times with consideration toward results at the CIF-State Meet as well as 800m/1600m and 800m/3200m combined times.
This past season at TCU, the sophomore collected a bronze medal in the mile at the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, running a 4:44.21.
Castillo also broke Rebecca Allison's 800m school record from 1986 at the conference meet, clocking in at 2:09.64. She then broke her own record the next day with a time of 2:08.54, joining fellow teammates Jill Johnson (high jump) and Tysen Townsend (pole vault) as 2020 TCU record breakers.
During the 2019 cross country season, she became the first Frog to win two races of any distance in a single season since Agnes Kemboi accomplished the feat in 2012.
Castillo collected Big 12 Cross Country Runner of the Week honors for her standout performances. The Saugus, Calif., native is the first TCU distance runner to earn Big 12 honors since Brenley Goertzen won the award back in Sept. of 2017.
