Frogs looking to qualify for 14th consecutive NCAA Championships
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's rifle team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on No. 6 Air Force for the NCAA Qualifier match Feb. 22.
Currently, the Horned Frogs rank second in the NCAA with a three-score average of 4,718.3. The NCAA Qualifier match will be the fourth and final score that factors into the team selection process as the Frogs seek to qualify for their 14th consecutive NCAA Championships.
Last weekend, TCU claimed its fourth Patriot Rifle Conference Championship, tying the second-best score in program history with a 4,728. Additionally, three members of the team fired marks of 1,183 or better.
Freshman Stephanie Grundsoee will look to continue her stellar freshman season, as she paces the team alongside sophomore Kristen Hemphill. Grundsoee's aggregate average of 1,180.6 ranks third in the country, while Hemphill follows closely in fourth, just a few tenths back, with a mark of 1,179.8. Senior Casey Lutz has fired a 1,175.3 average, good for eighth nationally. Sitting just outside the top 10 is junior Elizabeth Marsh with an average of 1,174.1.
In smallbore, TCU owns the nation's top team average with a mark of 2,336.2 and is led by three of the top seven performers in the NCAA. Grundsoee leads the team and ranks fourth in the country with a 586.1 average. She is followed by Marsh, who owns an average mark of 585.1. Hemphill also ranks inside the top seven, averaging a 584.3.
The Frogs are coming off their best air rifle performance in school history after turning in a score of 2,388. As a team, they rank second in the nation with a 2,376.1 average, just a fraction of a point behind Kentucky. TCU is well-represented atop the individual standings with three of the top six athletes in the country. Hemphill, who fired a career-high 599 last week, owns the third-best average in the NCAA with a 595.5. Grundsoee follows with an average mark of 594.5 in fifth. Newly crowned PRC air rifle champion Casey Lutz rounds out the top six with a 593.7.
Air Force posted a score of 4,681 at the PRC Championships and finished second in the conference. The Falcons currently own a three-score average of 4,682.0 and sit in the sixth position heading into the match. They are paced by Peter Fiori, who won the Smallbore title last weekend PRC Championships.
The first relay is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
