Frogs top the field in smallbore on day one
FORT WORTH – The TCU women's rifle team won the team smallbore title and took a commanding lead in the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships following an excellent team performance on day one.
TCU was crowned Smallbore Champions for the first time since Feb. 3, 2018, and three Horned Frogs qualified for smallbore final in the PRC Championships as the team turned in an overall score of 2,340 in the discipline. That marks the fourth time TCU has shot a 2,340 or better at home this season.
Stephanie Grundsoee, Casey Lutz and Elizabeth Marsh represented TCU in the finals. Grundsoee placed fourth with a 442.8. The Freshman also turned in the top score in the morning relays. Marsh finished in sixth, firing a 413.5. Lutz recorded a seventh-place finish after shooting a 395.7.
The first smallbore relay of the day was highlighted by Grundsoee's 589. The Denmark native fired a mark of 198 in kneeling and prone along the way. Kristen Hemphill recorded a score of 578. Not factoring into the team score was Rachel Kimbell and Catherine Miller with marks of 577 and 575, respectively.
In the second relay, Senior Casey Lutz shot a season-high score of 587, just one point shy of her career-best. Elizabeth Marsh turned in a score of 586. She has now fired a mark of 585 or better in four of her last five matches. Taylor Haffner and Stephanie Allan posted identical scores of 577, although they were not counters.
Grace Taschuk led the Frogs in the third and final relay. The freshman fired a 577, which featured a 197 kneeling and 199 prone. She served as the final counter for TCU. Abigail Gordon finished with a 575, and Noelle Christensen capped off the day with a score of 570.
Air Force's Peter Fiori took home the PRC individual smallbore championship in finals after outlasting Alaska Fairbanks' Kellen McAferty.
In the team standings, Air Force finished with the second-best team smallbore score. The Falcons posted a 2,314. Just a few points back sits Ohio State. The Buckeyes fired a 2,310 and were paced by Rhiann Travis. Alaska Fairbanks totaled a mark of 2,296, while UTEP turned in a team score of 2,264.
Air rifle competition will begin at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. All teams will compete in three relays, with finals set to begin around 1:15 p.m.
