Ryan notches 10th career game-winning goal
FORT WORTH – A penalty kick goal in the 29th minute from Yazmeen Ryan stood up as the game-winner as TCU topped Iowa State by a 1-0 score Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. Emily Alvarado made four saves in tallying her third consecutive shutout.
The Rundown
It was a tale of two halves as TCU dominated the first half, outshooting Iowa State 15-3. They Cyclones turned the tables and outshot the Horned Frogs in the second half, 9-3, but a penalty kick goal in the first half stood up as the difference in the game.
TCU was firing shots from all over the field in the first half. It started in the first three minutes of the match as Gracie Brian and Messiah Bright both forced the Cyclone keeper into diving stops.
The Frogs finally capitalized on their effort in the 29th minute. Yazmeen Ryan finished what she started. Her run into the 18th was cut short as she was tripped up by a Cyclone defender setting up the penalty kick. Her shot just eluded the Cyclone keeper and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Cyclones carried the bulk of the play. Emily Alvarado made a diving stop early in the half and fended off another attempt later in the half to preserve the shutout. For the most part, the shots for Iowa State were coming from distance or blocked by a defender before finding their way on goal.
Stat of the Game
10 – Yazmeen Ryan's game-winning goal was the 10th of her career. She has tallied 18 career goals moving her into a tie for eight all-time at TCU with Messiah Bright (2018-present), Allison Ganter (2014-17) and Alison Calleri (1996-99).
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell
Game assessment
"I thought the first half was fantastic. Really good with the speed of play; we were defending and buzzing. We won the midfield battle and if we can win the midfield, we can typically win the game. I thought we were really dangerous in the final third, getting some good looks.
We didn't play the best second. We weren't very sharp. We came out a little flat and that cost us. Looking at the stats, they are drastically different between the first half and the second half. It was energy and effort that was lacking. We didn't bring the juice so to speak in the second half to be successful and Iowa State did."
