Frogs hit the road for a top 10 matchup
FORT WORTH – The top-ranked TCU women's rifle team will travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on No. 8 Nebraska this weekend.
TCU is coming off its second-best performance of the season, where it fired a mark of 4,724. As a team, the Horned Frogs have posted three of the top six scores in the NCAA this season. Additionally, they sit atop the standings with the best three-score average in the nation (4,718).
This season, Stephanie Grundsoee and Kristen Hemphill have paced the Frogs. Both are tied for fourth with an aggregate average of 1,180.4. In four of her last five matches, Grundsoee has eclipsed the 1,180 mark, while Hemphill has been one of the most consistent shooters in the nation this season, topping the 1,180 mark five times.
Led by Grundsoee, Elizabeth Marsh and Hemphill, the Frogs own the second-best team smallbore average in the country with a 2,336.8. Grundsoee paces the team and owns the fifth-best mark in the NCAA with a 586.1 this season. Marsh follows her in sixth, averaging a 585.1. She was just one point shy of tying her career-high last week when she fired a 588. Hemphill sits in a tie for eighth with a mark of 585. Hemphill has posted a smallbore score of 585 or better in her last five matches dating back to October 26.
TCU ranks second in the nation in air rifle with a team score of 2,375, as four of the top 10 individual performers hail from the Frogs. Hemphill leads the team and ranks third in the country with a 595.4 average. The sophomore and defending Air Rifle National Champion has fired a score of 595 or better in all but one match this season. Grundsoee owns the fifth-best average with a 594.3. She is followed by teammate Casey Lutz, who is averaging a 593.9 this season. Rounding out the top 10 is freshman Grace Taschuk with a 592.6 average.
The Frogs faced off against Nebraska earlier this season in Fort Worth. They won the match by a score of 4,718-4,662. The Cornhuskers are ranked No. 8 in this week's CRCA poll. As a team, they are averaging an aggregate score of 4,656.4 and are led by Elena Flake (572.0 average in smallbore and 592.0 average in air rifle).
The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. inside the Nebraska Rifle Range.
