TCU-KANSAS POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 51, KANSAS 14
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On using two running backs:
"We got to see what our two young running backs are capable of. We have to use them smartly because we have an opportunity to redshirt them. We have eight games left. After our next ball game, we can put it all on the line because we have an off week before we go play Kansas State. But we have to go and get ready to play game five."
On Vernon Scott's return to the secondary:
"Oh, it was prevalent. We could go to our dime package, which I wasn't able to run last week. That's really where we get into third downs and stop people and we couldn't go to it a week ago."
On stopping Kansas running back Pooka Williams:
"We spent a lot of time talking leverage. For a guy like that, you can't go flat because he's going to cut back in two seconds. All of his big runs come when he cuts back, so we worked hard on no cutbacks and did well, except on that final one before the half when we kicked the ball out of bounds."
On the TCU defense:
"I was excited for them, but we ran two blitzes that they didn't run right and scored touchdowns. Somewhere along the line we're going to have to blitz better football teams and compete on the spot. That was a problem last week, it's a problem this week. They need to communicate. To be honest we should've put our twos in earlier because they played better than our ones did in the fourth quarter because they wanted to be in there."
"One of the guys you've got to give a lot of credit to is Jeff Gladney because we've had a revolving door with every other corner for the last four games, and he's kind of become my staple."
On the early game time:
"I was really happy with our young group for our first early game. We have to play early next week also. I was happy with the way they came out, got ready and played. I was worried about coming out early with about 50 guys, redshirts or freshman who were new."
On freshman quarterback Max Duggan:
"Like I've said, Max is going to be a great quarterback. He's got to quit making up his mind in the passing game. He did a great job checking down to the run, but he's got to do a better job understanding that you can't force it. Defense is always going to decide who you throw the ball too."
Closing remarks:
"You've got to get ready to play, every week you have to get ready to play. And you can't make up your mind who you want to play who you don't want to play if you want to be a successful program. The big games take care of themselves and you've got to win the games your supposed to win. That was one of the things we felt like we should do today, and we should've done it last week and we need to do it next week. You have to find a way to win and do the things you need to do. We're going to keep growing as a program, that's what you have to do. This is a year where we have to go on the road a lot more than we play at home, but to be honest with you our kids have played well on the road and I expect them to play well on the road all year."
TCU wide receiver Dylan Thomas
On him filling the role of the number two receiver on the team:
"Honestly, I feel that we have a lot of guys that can fill in that role. It is the matter of us getting those people the ball and really with a lot of the odds being on (Jalen Reagor) it give us a chance to step up and be even that much better of a player"
On if there was motivation from the SMU loss used in this past weeks practice:
"Definitely, especially knowing we had multiple chances to win that game so just this week it was all about start fast, don't let up and just keep going."
On in there was a difference in the mindset of practice this week:
"I wouldn't say there was a difference in practice, but we did pay more attention to detail such as catching a slant or stop route, coach really emphasized just the little things and that everything else will take care of itself."
TCU RB Darius Anderson:
On TCU having three players with 100+ rushing yards:
"It feels great. I give all the credit to the [offensive line], opening gaps, holes."
On the offseason:
"I cut fat, gained muscle. I lost weight. I got stronger and faster."
On watching the freshman running backs, Darwin Barlow and Daimarqua Foster:
"It's so fun. It was so exciting. I see what they do every day. They're willing to work, willing to learn. Some of the hardest young players I've seen."
On carrying the momentum:
"A lot, just because we went into practice this week with a chip on our shoulder. It was one of the best practices we ever had. Going in with the same mentality. We just need to keep pushing and pushing."
On hitting the 2,000-yard mark:
"It feels great, but a Big 12 Championship would feel even better."
On the QBs:
"I think all three of them played well. I know all of them can play. When they came in, they made the most of their opportunity."
TCU RB Darius Anderson:
On three, 100+ rushing yard games:
"It feels great. I give all the credit to the [offensive line], opening gaps, holes."
On the offseason:
"I cut fat, gained muscle. I lost weight. I got stronger and faster."
On watching the freshman RB's Barlow and Foster:
"It's so fun. It was so exciting. I see what they do every day. They're willing to work, willing to learn. Some of the hardest young players I've seen."
On carrying the momentum:
"We went into practice this week with a chip on our shoulder. It was one of the best practices we ever had. Going in with the same mentality. We just need to keep pushing and pushing."
On hitting the 2,000-yard mark:
"It feels great, but a Big 12 Championship would feel even better."
On the QB's:
"I think all three of them played well. I know all of them can play. When they came in, they made the most of their opportunity."
TCU Cornerback Jeff Gladney
On shutting down the Kansas passing game:
"It was really good for the whole team. We came out firing on both sides of the ball, and when we do that, we are dangerous."
On getting Vernon Scott back this week:
"It's good to have Vernon, especially the communication aspect of it. He's getting people lined up, getting calls and checks."
On the challenge of playing different positions:
"I look forward to that role, especially playing cornerback. I like [playing on] 'the island.'"
On limiting Kansas to virtually no vertical plays:
"It was very impressive. We just came out and played our game, stuck to the game plan, and executed."
On defending Pooka Williams:
"Pooka is a great player. He is very shifty. You have to scheme against him because you know he is going to cut back and do a lot of spins. It is fun when you play guys like that."
TCU Safety Trevon Moehrig
On bouncing back after last week's loss:
"It is definitely fun to bounce back. It was very important to make that decision, like [Garret] Wallow said, to come back or sit and fold up. Today I think we just came back and played with a lot of energy."
On containing Pooka Williams:
"We knew that he was going to try to take it outside, so we made an emphasis to not make those cuts outside. I think we did a good job of that today."
On setting the tone for Big 12 play:
"It definitely sets the tone getting that first Big 12 win under belt. It will keep us pushing forward and wanting it more."
On communication in the secondary:
"It was one thing we emphasized this past week in practice, to make sure we keep communicating and keep talking so everybody knows what to do."
On getting to return a punt:
"I love returning punts. It was one of the things I got to do back in high school, so we'll see if they put me back there some more. If they need me, I'm ready."

Kansas head coach Les Miles
On the game:
"I ran into a good football team today. We will learn a lot from it. We did some good things as a team and responded late in the game. We worked hard. This football team is going to get beyond this and improve. That is who we are. This program is not built in a day, it will take some work and we are ready to do that work."
On losing big:
"I think (Gary) Patterson has a veteran club, he says some days they are veterans, some days they are not. Today they were veteran. Their personal is fast with big tight ends and backs on the perimeter. I thought today was a pretty representative TCU team."
On long drives:
"I would like to have not kicked it to (Reagor), if I had to do it over. I did not lose spirit in this team and I don't think this team did either. It was a man's chore to get that team stopped and I think we will look at the film. We won't stay there a long time because we have a lot of work to do. We will make some adjustments."
On running back Velton Gardner:
"We knew that Velton was going to have some talent and some ability. We were really looking for an opportunity to get him in the game and see how talented he is. He put in the endzone, made a couple of nice cuts."
On the use of different offensive formations:
"We tried to use the I early but ran into some bumps. We really moved the ball more in the spread, but still ran into some bumps. We did not throw and catch as much as we would have liked to. It's not the players fault, by design, they just did a great job of covering up passes."
Kansas quarterback Carter Stanley
On the offense:
"It was tough to today. As an offense we didn't do a good job of getting into third and manageable. A lot of those third downs were third-and-long. At the end of the day, we just didn't execute."
On missing key running backs:
"It's all about next man up, really. Today, we did have some different guys in there, but that's something that can't affect us. We've got to be next man up and just execute."
On missing Khalil Herbert:
"Yeah, it was tough. Khalil is a really good friend of mine. He's a great football player. I don't know too much about it. It just seems like a personal deal. For us it's all about next man up and we have to move on from that."
On reasons for the struggling passing game:
"They had a great game plan. They obviously have some good athletes on that side of the ball. Coach Patterson has been known as a great defensive coach for years now. They had a great game plan. As players on the offense, we didn't execute. We didn't make adjustments. It was a tough one."
Kansas safety Bryce Tornedan
On the defense's second half:
"It came down to effort and energy. I felt like we lacked that in the first half, the heat kind of got us. The second half was make or break, we had to put our foot down and that ultimately led to us playing better."
On TCU's third-down success:
"In any conference you have to do well on third downs. It's tough to see on the field. Ultimately, we have to improve and get better on third downs."
