Horned Frogs begin Big 12 play on ESPNU at Oklahoma
FORT WORTH – TCU volleyball (5-5) kicks off its conference season with a Wednesday night tilt against the Oklahoma Sooners (8-3). The match is set to begin at 8 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU as a part of the ESPNU Big 12 volleyball season opening doubleheader. TCU is 3-4 in Big 12 openers since joining the league in 2012.
Match Information
Last Week
-TCU is coming off an 0-2 week in which it fell to Rice and SMU in straight sets.
-The matches were the first two road contests of 2019 for the Horned Frogs after they opened the year with an eight game homestand.
-Julia Adams was strong on the outside despite the losses, delivering 17 kills (2.83 kills/set) on a combined .293 hitting percentage.
-Audrey Nalls continues to be the main weapon on the outside as she turned in her fifth 10+ kill match of 2019 against Rice. She is averaging 40.125 attacks per-match over her last eight appearances.
-Afedo Manyang returned to the lineup this week after an injury and showed flashes of brilliance; getting two blocks in the first 10 points against Rice and putting up a career-best three digs in just one set against SMU.
Nalls Well That Ends Well
-Nalls leads all Big 12 freshman in kills (123), kills per set (3.51) points (139.5) and points per set (3.97). She is fifth overall in the conference in kills per set and in points per set through 10 matches.
-The Waxahachie native has been the Horned Frogs primary offensive weapon all season as she leads the team in kills, attacks and points, playing all six rotations.
Afedo Manyang: Ace Queen
-Despite missing three matches to injury, freshman middle blocker Afedo Manyang is second in the Big 12 in aces (14) and first in aces per set (0.70).
-She is the only Big 12 player to record more than three aces in multiple three-set matches, having done so twice – four vs. High Point and five vs. Colorado St.
-As a team, TCU is second in the Big 12 in aces per set, averaging 1.37 in the 35 sets played this season.
Freshmen Phenoms
-The Freshman Horned Frogs have provided plenty of evidence to back up their ranking as the fifth best recruiting class in the nation. TCU is led by freshmen in kills (Nalls), total attacks (Nalls), assists (Uçar), aces (Manyang) blocks/set (Manyang) and points (Nalls).
-Four Frogs have scored more than 50.0 points this season, three of which are freshman: Nalls (139.5), Julia Adams (86.5) and Manyang (57.5) The lone veteran among them is sophomore Katie Clark, who is second on the team, accounting for 91. points through eight matches.
-The Freshmen have accounted for 229 of TCU's 407 kills (61.7 percent) and 288.5 of the Horned Frogs 532 team points (58.8 percent).
Scouting the Opponent: Oklahoma
-Oklahoma enters play with an 8-3 record after going 1-1 last week. The Sooners fell in five sets to Texas A&M before besting SMU 3-1 at home last Saturday.
-The Sooners boast a balanced attack, with three of their regular starters averaging over three points per set this season.
-OU boasts one of the strongest liberos in the conference, Keyton Kinley. The junior leads the Big 12 in digs/set (5.31), helping the Sooners own the second-best opponents hitting percentage in the Big 12 (.177). They lead the conference in digs/set as a team, with 16.09.
-Senior middle blocker Brianna Kadiku leads the Big 12 in blocks per set, averaging 1.33 thus far.
-This is the 18th meeting between the two schools, with OU leading the series, 12-5.
-This is the second season TCU has opened Big 12 play against OU. The Horned Frogs won the match last season, 3-0, at The Rickel.
