TCU-SMU POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 38, SMU 41
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the game:
"There's a way to win and a way to lose. You need to give SMU credit and Coach (Sonny) Dykes. It's a simple thing. We got outplayed and we got outcoached. (SMU) is 3-0 coming into the ball game. They beat us. We made mistakes at the end. We had four downs to get a first down. If we get one more first down, then we could've kicked a field goal. It's as simple as that. It won't be my last loss and it won't be my last win. The bottom line is we have to give SMU credit."
On the slow start:
"Like I said, we practice how we needed to. A lot of energy was put into last game and we weren't ready to go. I don't want to say it was a slow start, as much as I give SMU credit."
On Max Duggan's first start:
"We didn't win. That's how all quarterbacks get judged. He's a freshman. Andy Dalton got treated the same way. He just didn't make the plays we needed to make. I'm not upset with him, there's a lot to learn probably coaching wise and playing wise."
On the final drive:
"We didn't kick the last field goal because to be honest with you, right around 40-42 is what Johnathan Song is. He's not a 50 guy. And we haven't kicked well in practice."
On a silver lining to the game:
"There is no silver lining. In 2005, this was the only game I lost. It cost us our whole season. We went 11-1. And I'll say this, you should give SMU all the credit. Our guys were looking at the sidelines when they changed plays. I've got to do a better job changing my signals to be honest with you. It is what it is."
On SMU's aggressive start:
"I already knew what SMU was going to be like. I told them, on the second play of the game on the tight end reel we knew it. If you've got a guy you stay with him, so we all learned a valuable lesson."
On SMU quarterback Shane Buechele:
"I mean they won and scored. He ran the offense, passed and to be honest with you they did a great job from the sidelines. I have to do a better job changing my signals because my kids listen to them call it out. I'm not taking anything away from SMU, they outcoached us outplayed us, that's the answer to the question. Our young team learned a valuable lesson, so hopefully we won't let it become two. We've got to get ready for the next ball game."
On what TCU needs to do for next week:
"Practice, practice just like (they) practiced for the first two weeks, not like (they) did on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. There's no blame, if you want to blame someone blame me. I'm the head coach, I'm the guy who's supposed to get them ready to go. We didn't all the things we needed to do from a head coaching standpoint, the bottom line is I wouldn't say anything else other than 'give SMU credit.'"
TCU Co-Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie
On Max Duggan:
"He competed till the end. We did not start the game very well and a lot of that is my fault. He battled in the second half, he made some plays and gave us a chance to win. At the end of the day, I did not do a very good job of getting him in a rhythm early in the game."
On what he changed with Duggan at Half:
"I really tried to get him going in the second half. That's one of the things you get when you play with tempo. He was able to make some plays with his feet if something broke down. We will have to look at the film in terms of progressions or where he was with his feet."
On Coach Dykes familiarity with TCU:
"They played better than we did, they coached better than we did. They were ready to play more so than our guys were."
On the rest of the season
"We are at an impasse now. You've got nine games left. What are you going to do? Are you going to let this one linger? Or are you going to come out better? I think each week, the game has slowed down for Max (Duggan). There is a lot to learn for him and for all of us. We will go out and practice Sunday and next week and see how he will improve from this experience."
TCU Linebacker Garret Wallow
On SMU's intensity:
"They played a hard game, credit and respect to SMU. It was a tough loss for our defense. They had more emotion than us, like coach said. We have a decision to make now, whether we are going to step down or come tomorrow ready to work, and get ready for Kansas next week, and play TCU defense, TCU offense and TCU football."
On his message to the younger players:
"It's one of those things, we all don't play perfect every time out. It's adversity. I have to do my best to uplift the guys and we've got to come tomorrow ready to work."
On the rivalry game energy:
"Focus, more than letting the energy get the best of you. That's one of the things we talk about. They came out ready to play. They are a very good team, I wish them the best of luck the rest of the year, but we have to put this loss behind us. We can't forget it, though, we have to be ready to work and build off of the lessons of this game."
TCU running back Darius Anderson
On the loss:
"Just to keep fighting. We've got to execute and do our jobs and make less mistakes."
On the fourth quarter:
"I feel like our team showed fight and not putting our head down. Everyone had energy and wanted to keep pushing each other."
On the first loss after two wins:
"We just approach it like its another game. It puts fire in our hearts to go out there and working hard."
On being a senior:
"I just tell them to keep their head up. It's over now, it's another day, keep moving on and go out there and work hard."
On comparing this season to the 2005 season:
"Oh for sure. The energy in the locker room is still positive, everyone was like 'keep your head up we are going to conference' so it's definitely positive."

SMU Head Coach Sonny Dykes
On the TCU-SMU rivalry and the game overall:
"It's gratifying to beat a good football team. When you play against a really good team, and find a way to win, and win on the road, it's gratifying."
On the opening drive:
"I thought it was really important to get off to a good start, especially when you're playing on the road against a really good football team, and a team that can feed off momentum. TCU does that remarkably well. When momentum is going and they're feeding off it, they're a different team. We needed to get off to a good start, get some confidence."
On beating Coach Gary Patterson:
"I probably have as much respect for Gary as anyone in college football. I root for TCU during the week. I know a ton of guys on the staff and I like their players. They run a first-class program, but when you beat someone as good as them, it's gratifying. It's satisfying."
SMU quarterback Shane Buechele
On what means most to him – starting 4-0, winning on the road against a ranked team, or personal first win over TCU:
"Just getting the win. It was really important for our program to get this win, and I think at large it's important to go 1-0 each week, so it was important to go 1-0 this week. It was a great team win. Personally, I am really excited to get a win against TCU."
On beating a good TCU defense:
"It feels really good. They are a tough team. My freshman year, they had a top defense. My sophomore year, they had a really good defense too. They are still good on defense, I think they were No. 2 on defense coming into this game. It was important for us to go get the win, and for me it was really exciting."
On what the win means for the team as a whole:
"We are excited, especially to get a win against a ranked team, especially on the road. TCU is a great team. This next week is the most important, going out to South Florida. We are really excited to go out there and try to go get a win."
SMU linebacker Delano Robinson
On being 4-0:
"It's unbelievable. All the hard work in the summer and spring football. We took one step at a time. The staff has been good with us to make sure we keep out head down and keep going no matter what. 4-0 is something big. It's been 25 years since SMU has been 4-0, so this is a big deal for us. All we are going to do is keep going."
On getting the last stop of the game:
"Basically, it was just one play at a time. We did play one all the way up to the last down. We don't think about nothing. We're all on the same team at the end of the day. We don't blame nobody. We keep out heads down and keep grinding.
On if defending TCU wide receiver Jalen Reagor was a part of the game plan:
"He was a big focus point as far as they are always going to try and get them the ball. We make sure that whenever we see him, we try to limit him to jet motions and fade routes."
On using this win to build confidence:
"I'd say this is a big confidence booster. We had already gained confidence being 3-0 for the first time in 35 years. Winning this game was a big confidence booster just trying to gain more respect for our name. People need to learn that SMU, heart of Dallas. Things are changing around here."
