Mariah Castiilo wins her second 5K in as many weeks
DALLAS — Mariah Castillo and Evelyn Mandel finished first and second respectively at the Gerald Richey Invitational in Dallas. Both the men and women ran 5,000m races.
Castillo crossed in 17:35.1, shedding over 25 seconds off her time from the Ken Garland Invitational this past weekend. Mandel ran an 18:16.5 en route to her second-straight top-three finish. She dropped nearly 45 seconds from her time last week.
"I thought Mariah looked extremely strong again and was aggressive," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "She's running by herself for the majority of the race, so she's having to push herself. She does that very well, she's a pretty competitive person."
Four Horned Frogs placed in the top 20 on the men's side. Lakelin Conrad led TCU's men for the third week in a row, placing 11th with a 15:54.0. DJ Sauer (16:25.3) and Samuel Busa (16.25.5) crossed next, finishing 16th and 17th, respectively. Freshman Mason Payne completed the quartet with a 16:37.6 mark and 19th place.
"I thought this week was a continuation of last week," Fazioli said. "I think almost everyone ran better this week which is the natural progression we were looking for."
The men finished third as a team while the women finished fourth.
The Gerald Richey Invitational is named after former Maverick assistant track and field coach Gerald Richey who passed away at the age of 83 on Aug. 30. Richey retired in 2013 after working at UTA for 19 years.
TCU has over a month before its next race. On Oct. 19 the Horned Frogs travel to College Station for the Arturo Barrios Invitational.
