TCU-WEST VIRGINIA POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 17, WEST VIRGINIA 20
TCU Coach Gary Patterson:
Opening statement:
"Got to make plays. Can't give ballgames away. Can't play offense on second and 15. Can't keep drives alive on personal fouls, plain and simple. Only a few times in my life, since I've been here, that we've lost when I've held people under 300 yards and that's happened twice this year. Plain and simple. I feel sorry for my seniors that I didn't get them back to a bowl game, simple as that. We got beat. We're not going to a bowl game because we gave it away, to be honest with you... I feel bad for the fans, I feel bad for the seniors, whatever senior group it is. Only three times in 22 years have we not done that [go to a bowl game]."
On this group of seniors:
"A lot of these seniors fought through last year, and that's more than anything. I wanted to make sure I got them there this year, because they fought through last year with all the injuries and everything that went on. This year they had to deal with freshmen. We had them stopped but we had a person roughing the quarterback. Go down the list of things. It wasn't just one thing."

West Virginia head coach Neal Brown
On the Season:
"I'm proud of our guys. This was a huge win to finish the year. It's been a long year, but I thought that our guys battled. We've played really three really poor halves and we've been in every late game this month, with the exception of Oklahoma, in the fourth quarter and we haven't won enough. So, the last three games of the season, winning two of those on the road versus really proud programs is big for us in this first year of us building a program and playing a lot of young guys.
On the game:
"Credit to our staff. I thought we, especially on defense, had a great plan. The defensive staff has really given us a chance all year. Guys have bought in. We've been able to get pressure, and I think our defensive front has been the difference. We flew around today and only gave up one touchdown against their offense. They've been good running the ball and we kind of bent but never broke in the second half and just hung around.
"But the thing we did on offense was we took advantage of turnovers. I think if you look at all the stats, the biggest stat, and the reason we won the game was we got 10 points off turnovers. We threw three interceptions and they got zero points. I think that ended up being the story of the game."
On Gary Patterson:
"Jarret (Doege) didn't have his A game today. He wasn't very sharp, and I don't think he was it very well. A lot of credit to what Gary does defensively. I think he's one of the top defensive minds in the country and he makes it tough."
West Virginia Linebacker Shea Campbell
On TCU's final drives:
"I had a feeling that we were going to have to go out there again, but I was pretty confident in our defense. I knew that once we got a fourth down and got them off the field, the second time would probably be the same result."
On the defensive effort:
"It's huge. We always talk about points off turnovers. If you look at it, they didn't score and that's critical. That's probably why we won that game. We held them on defense to 10 points and that's a testament to everyone in that locker room."
West Virginia running back Kennedy McKoy
On the importance of ending the season on the right note:
"It was very important for me and this team to finish this season strong. That's for us seniors, for us to leave a legacy for how we want to be remembered and to jump start these younger guys and the rest of the team into the next year. So, it was very important for us to get that win."
On keeping the right attitude:
"It was always about keeping the right attitude. Sometimes, stuff isn't always going to go your way. You just have to be able to control the things you can control."
On getting guys to buy into the new coach:
"We became more of a team as the year went on. We went through some struggles throughout this season. Things didn't go the way we wanted them to. I was really proud of how our team stuck together and fought in all of the games that we had."
On breaking a few runs:
"TCU did do a good job defensively today. But in certain situations and formations they just gave us some favorable looks. So, it was our job to take advantage of that opportunity to strike a big play."
West Virginia left tackle Colton McKivitz
On going out the right way:
"There's a lot of sentimental value in that game. Just with these guys and fighting through some of those tough losses. Then to win out in this final game for us 22 seniors, it means a lot. It's been a hard-fought year and things didn't go the way we wanted to, but we wanted to make sure that this year's team went out on a win. We are just thankful that this team pulled together and fought hard all week. We didn't have a lot to fight for, not a bowl game or anything like that. So just for those guys to fight for our seniors and get us that win, it means a lot to us."
On quarterback Jarret Doege:
"As an offensive line, we kept going to him saying 'keep being a baller, you're a guy in there, you're a dude, just keep fighting through, we're going to pick up blitzes.' It's just the way he plays. He's a well-focused guy. His mentality is great."
