Horned Frogs raid Lubbock for first road win in Big 12 play
LUBBOCK, Texas -- TCU volleyball (6-8, 1-3) won six of the last eight points in the fifth set to secure a 3-2 road victory over Texas Tech (12-6, 2-2) Sunday afternoon inside United Supermarkets Arena. The returning players led the way throughout the night as redshirt junior Ashley Waggle, senior Sarah Langs and sophomore Katie Clark all set career highs in the win.
"It was nice to see our team battle with a great Texas Tech team today," head coach Jill Kramer said. "We executed our game plan well, were locked in at the service line and had some key players step-up today. Katie, Waggle and Langs were huge for us down the stretch. McKenzie (Nichols) ran the offense well and did a great job giving our attackers good opportunities to score. They were determined to leave Lubbock with a win, and they were relentless in their effort to get it. Great team win."
TCU NOTABLES:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (TTU, 25-21): The Horned Frogs started hot, hitting .667 to lead 10-3 and force an early Tech timeout. But the offensive execution waned and TTU found themselves back into the set, even taking the lead at 14-13. The Frogs would claim an 18-16 advantage thanks to back-to-back blocks by Langs, but a TTU run ended hopes of an opening set win. Nalls led the team with four kills while Langs finished with a hand in all four TCU blocks.
Set 2 (TCU, 25-21): The second set started with no clear advantage. Both teams traded blows until the score was tied, 19-19. From there, Waggle put the attack on her shoulders and rattled off three kills to help TCU win six of the next eight points and tie the match at one set apiece. Clark was a menace in the second, finishing with six kills on 13 attempts. Waggle delivered five kills of her own to help TCU bounce back into the match.
Set 3 (TCU, 25-17): The Raider offense seemed to have found its groove to start the third set, claiming an early 8-6 lead. But momentum quickly shifted when the Frogs exploded on a 9-0 run, fueled by four kills from Clark. The run gave TCU a 20-12 advantage and firm control in the set. The Frogs maintained the intensity to close out the set, bringing a one set advantage into the fourth. Clark continued her beastly performance, leading the team with seven kills. TCU finished with 19 kills in the set, the most recorded in a single set this season.
Set 4 (TTU, 25-18): After TCU jumped out to a 10-5 lead, it was Tech's turn to go on a run. The Red Raiders won 16 of the next 20 points and would end up winning the set by seven. Clark led the team with four kills.
Set 5 (TCU, 16-14): Attack errors from Texas Tech allowed the Frogs to jump ahead, 5-2 but the Raiders wouldn't go away, coming from behind to claim an 8-10 lead. Both teams would swap 2-0 runs until it was even, 12-12. Tech took a one-point lead only for Waggle to get the point right back with ther 18th kill of the match. Tech scored once more after that, earning a match point but again it was Waggle with the answer to tie it at 14-14. Dennison delivered a timely ace to give TCU match point, leading to a match-winning block from Nichols and Langs on the right side. Waggle led the team with four kills on .400 hitting, while Langs delivered three blocks.
