FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU swimming and diving team is slated to begin the 2018-2019 season on Saturday, hosting UT-Permian Basin in the Rickel and sending a group of athletes to Lawrence, Kan., for the CSCSAA Open Water National meet. Competition at CSCAA is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., with the meet against UTPB scheduled for 10 a.m.
NEW ERA
Saturday will see the debut of new head coach James Winchester and his staff. Winchester comes to TCU after a successful three-year tenure at George Washington University, where he was a two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and won two conference titles. Also making their TCU coaching debuts are former GW assistants Anthony Crowder and Birkir Jonsson, and Texas A&M great Nathan Lavery. Former graduate assistant Jean Madison returns to TCU after coaching for a season at William Jewel College in Kansas City, Mo.
LAST SEASON
TCU returns several athletes that recorded program top five marks last season. Maddie Ibrahim and Micaela Roemer both set individual school records, as well as contributing to a pair of relay records. Ibrahim now holds the top two 100 back times in TCU history with a record of 54.09, while Roemer ranks first in the 100 fly at 53.79. Catherine Maxey set the second fastest 100 fly mark in school history last year at 54.27. Ibrahim and Roemer, along with Claire Munster and Devin Newton, broke the school records in both the 200 and 400 medley relays last year's conference meet.
On the men's side, Joao Andrade set school records in both the 200 and 500 free with times of 1:37.35 and 4:22.37. Radu Duican ranks second in TCU history in the 200 with a mark of 1:37.59.
HOME OPENER
For the fourth consecutive season, TCU will host UT-Permian Basin for the home opener. The Horned Frogs are 5-0 against the Falcons dating back to 2011, including a comfortable win a year ago. The women won 132-94, while the men won 143-73.
CSCAA
TCU will send seven athletes to CSCSAA Open Water Nationals in Lawrence, Kan., at Lone Star Lake Park. The women's 5,000-meter race begins at 8:30 a.m. with the men's race to follow at 10:30 a.m. The field consists of 73 women and 68 men from various colleges and universities. Competing for the Horned Frogs on the women's side are Amanda Key, Megan Morris, Nicqueline Rettberg, Emily Visagie, with Kevin Chao, Rhory Legendre, and Dayne Odendaal on the men's side.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"We have some great opportunities for racing this weekend here at home against UT-Permian Basin and on the road at CSCAA Open Water Nationals," Winchester said. "We've seen some great training, but this will be our first live racing opportunity and it will be a good barometer to measure where we're at, how we put our races together, how we show up on the boards and what we can do as a team. It's going to be a long season and we have a lot of work to do, but this is a stepping stone towards our ultimate goals to perform at a high level come February and March during championship season."
