On the win over Southern:
"We did what we needed to do, but we're going to have to play a lot better starting with this week."
On the defense:
"We only played 50-something plays of defense, so we're not as banged up in getting ready for a Friday ball game (against SMU)."
On SMU:
"We have an SMU team that is going to be better. They know a lot about us, so we need to get ready to play."
On the quarterbacks:
"(Shawn Robinson) practiced well all week, and so did Mike (Collins). Mike came in and ran the offense. I thought Shawn stayed in the pocket. A younger Shawn would have ran a couple of times, but he stayed in the pocket and threw the ball down field."
On the wide receivers:
"I think you saw some of our young wide receivers have the potential to be really good players."
TCU Quarterback Shawn Robinson
On the first game of the season:
"It was awesome just to be out there with my guys. We've been working since January. Just to finally get out there and get a game under our belts, it was a really, really cool experience."
On his first career touchdown run:
"That was exhilarating. The line blocked it perfectly and I had no choice but to score, they blocked everybody."
On the differences between his start last year and this year:
"It's just different because you're the guy. Last year it just happened out of nowhere. I hadn't played in a long time. It's a totally different mindset. I feel like I've gotten better at some things, I definitely have a lot more to get better at, but I feel like I've matured a lot from last year."
On his pocket presence:
"That was definitely one thing I had to work on a lot. (Last year) I drifted a lot in the pocket, this offseason, me and coach Cumbie worked on it. Trusting the (offensive) line, they give me all day to throw. I've just got to sit in there and deliver the ball."
On next week's SMU game:
"I'm excited to get back out there and working on my mistakes and trying to get a game better. I will most likely watch their game tonight."
Sophomore Wide Receiver Jalen Reagor
On his performance in the first game:
"I feel like there is a lot of room for improvement. I feel like me and Shawn could have connected on a few more balls. It's just repetition. We'll be alright."
On the young receivers:
"I think the receivers stepped up big. Derius Davis the true freshman, he's pretty speedy, kind of like Turp. He did his job, ya know. I feel like we got speed all around the field.
On making a name for himself:
"I feel like I can put this team on my back and go make plays and go do whatever it is I need to do to help the team win."
On Shawn Robinson:
"He did good. He's a threat for real. He can run. Once he relaxes and gets in rhythm he's going to be scary."
On Mike Collins:
"Mike can sling it. He is pretty consistent and just like Shawn if he can gel and get in a rhythm then we can just mold into one."
On the team's offensive potential:
"The ceiling is very high. Once we gel like we're supposed to, we're the best offense in college football."
On TCU's team identity:
"We play fast. We like to have speed on the field. And we can run."
On what this win means:
"You can only get to two wins once you have one."
On playing against Southern:
"Personally, I love football. Just being able to get up and play against anyone besides my teammates, I can do that. This team can get up and play against anybody. We showed that today."
Senior Safety Niko Small
On the learning experiences from the big plays given up in the first half:
"There were some for sure. It's hard to say what you are going to do in a game until the game gets here. But, when the game gets here and you finally get your feet wet a little bit, you get to understand the pace of the game and stuff like that, especially with a lot of our young players."
On Southern's touchdown pass:
"Just a coverage bust. That's about it."
On Coach Patterson's reaction following Southern's touchdown:
"He expect perfection and we expect it as well, so when the puzzle doesn't fit right he get's a little agitated but we do as well. We know that we have to live up to that expectation of perfection."
On the defense's performance as a whole:
"I thought we handled it pretty well. There are bits and pieces that we can get a better on and work on a little more. But, as a team on defense today we did pretty well."
On the younger players' performance:
"I felt it was a great thing [to witness]. It was great for them to get their feet wet, understand the pace of the game, and where your mind goes during the game while learning to focus in. They all came out today and did what they were supposed to do and I was proud of them."
On their performance being a confidence builder:
"We didn't doubt ourselves, but it's a better look at things. We have a good understanding of where we are, where we need to be, and what we need to work on."
Sophomore linebacker Garret Wallow
On it being his first time as a starting LB at TCU:
"I felt very well between camp and these two weeks you get to prepare. We went through a lot of plays and spent a lot of time going over what they do. Overall I was very confident."
On his sack in the second quarter:
"I was amped up and excited to make that play for my team. It put us in a great position to put the offense back on the field."
On Coach Patterson's comparison of Garret to Jason Phillips:
"He did compare me to Jason Phillips because I know one speed and that's 100%. He always tells me that so he always tells me to slow down a little bit.
"In order to slow myself down, I just talk to my other linebackers and read the formations that we have and talk it out with my safeties."
On defense's performance as a whole:
"Our defense played well. We are a humble team so I know that we have a lot more improving to do. Otherwise, I feel we played well as a unit."
On his transition from safety to linebacker
"I wasn't really that much of a struggle. At safety you cover a lot, and at linebacker it's almost like strong safety because you still have to cover. It has been a really good transition for me, and I really like it and feel that it is the position for me."
On it being his first time as a starting LB at TCU:
"I felt very well between camp and these two weeks you get to prepare. We went through a lot of plays and spent a lot of time going over what they do. Overall I was very confident."
On what point he felt he could play linebacker on TCU's defense:
"Coach Patterson used to always mess with me when I was playing safety my freshman year, saying that he was going to move me to linebacker. I never thought he would, but he actually did so I knew it was coming."
On possible connections with members of Southern's team being from south Louisiana:
"Their starting running back, Devon Benn, was my running back in high school (John Curtis, New Orleans, LA). It was good to play against him. It felt like old times back when we practiced together in high school."
On the defense going forward:
"I know that come tomorrow, we have to get prepared for SMU. We need to [forget] this team and focus on the next team."
On TCU's success in switching the positions of players:
"We are a very fast team, so when he switches people to linebacker, it's because he wants speed at the linebacker position. It honestly makes sense when it all comes down to it."
Southern Head Coach Dawson Odums
On the game:
"From an effort stand point I really think my guys competed at a really high level. Offensively we threw the ball a little bit, but they really had great coverage, there is a reason they're one of the top defensive football teams year in and year out. Like I told our guys, If we can move the ball against this defense, this is the best defense we'll see all year. If we see another group like that we'll be in trouble again, but for the most part i thought we moved the ball and found a rhythm."
On Shawn Robinson's performance:
"I thought their quarterback did an outstanding job at managing the game."
On Southern QB John Lampley's performance:
"What we had for a game plan was there, we just have to execute. Although he missed some throws, its hard to make throws when they're in your lap."
On Ty Summers performance:
"I think #42, I don't know his name, is one of the better players in the country. We're not talking about this ball game, i'm talking about in the country, NFL, college, high school, he is one of the best."
On player participation:
"We called a lot of guys names, a lot of guys played. There are no free meals on this trip. We take you for a reason and I think we played probably 98 or 99% of the guys who travel with us."
On QB John Lampley's head injury:
"No, he doesn't have a concussion, he was cleared to play, he could've went back in the game, it's precaution. You've got to be smart in these games, even though you want to be competitive and win the game, when you get to a point where its 41-7 and winning is out the window, you have to be smart with your team."
On preparing to move forward:
"We put some good things on film and like I told the team, we put some bad things on film. So let's correct our bad, let's not harp on the bad, let's fix it."
On Coach Patterson:
"Coach Patterson is a first-class guy, just talking with him and getting the chance to meet him last summer at camp. I have so much respect for their program. They do it the right way, they're very disciplined and he does a great job of managing the game himself. I tip my hat off to him because that's class."
On settling into the game:
I didn't let two bad snaps get to me, but I know that I can't have plays like that. You don't win or lose the game on the first drive, so I knew I had to keep playing and doing my job.
On handling games like this:
You just have to take the positives out. Coach is always telling us to build off our positives and things we are good at. But we also need to look at the bad things, so we can go and work on them next week in practice.
On John handling the game:
He's a pretty smooth guy and he doesn't get to riled up. I talked to him on the sidelines and his mind was in a good place.
On offense:
John brings a lot of good things to the offense and can make it amazing. We moved the ball on a power five team, so I think there are a lot of good things to take away from that.
Southern Linebacker Calvin Lunkins
On making plays in the backfield:
"I've been watching film all week, so I knew where some of the plays were going to be. I just shot my gap and made some plays."
On the defense being on the field:
"We prepared to be on the field for a lot of plays. I felt that we were in good shape to play."
On giving up 55 points:
"I felt like we played pretty well. We need to work on our coverages, but we'll be ready for conference. Now we need to look at the positives, watch film, and correct some mistakes so that we can get better every day."
On gaining confidence:
"We definitely gained confidence because we played our hearts out. We played hard throughout the whole game and that's all coach asks of us."
Southern Defensive Back Demerio Houston
On getting some pass breakups:
"It gives me a lot of confidence. I feel like I can guard anybody in the conference and in the nation. With me guarding those guys with NFL scouts watching, it gives me a lot of confidence.
On being on the field for a long time:
"When the offense keeps us on the field, it drains us. We need to hydrate a little bit more. It's just things that we need to work on."
On the hot temperatures:
"The heat played a lot. I cramped a little bit. Coach pulled me after the first half. Other than that, I felt like we competed hard."
Southern Wide Receiver Cameron Mackey
On his touchdown:
"I was just trying to set a shoot route, as long as possible, then wheel route I was just trying to make a play for our team."
On that being the first time a SWAC team has scored on TCU:
"We still lost, so it doesn't make a difference."
On takeaways from this game:
"For the most part, we kept fighting the whole game, that's what you want to see. There were a lot of positives from this game, we had a lot of negative."
On quarterback John Lambley:
"He looked real good to me. He looked comfortable as the game went on. That'll get him more comfortable for next week and we'll just keep on fighting."
On nerves before the game:
"Everybody was nervous before the game, it's a big stage. Most of them have never played against a team ranked number 16 in the nation before. We just had to get all the jitters out."
On hardest part about going against TCU defensive backs:
"Their size."
On the health of guys coming out of this game:
"It was just more of cramps. The heat kind of got to us. But we came out actually healthy, next week we will be a lot better and stronger and more conditioned."
On how this prepares them for next week:
"It actually prepares us a lot. Next week, we will be ready. This week, we were ready, but we've got the first game out of the way against a good team, so next week we're gonna come out again against another good team and hopefully put up a good game against them too."
Southern Running Back Devon Benn
On going against TCU defense:
"Of course, TCU is a great team. They are number one in a lot of things. We've just got to build on our positives and get rid of the negatives. We will go back and watch the film and get ready for next week."
On the biggest positive today:
"We had a lot of explosive plays. We've just got to keep building on that. And on the sideline, once we got down in the game none of our heads were down, we were all positive, we had positive energy the whole game."
On what they learn from a game like this:
"You can learn a lot. From miss reads to missed passes, to tackles, there are a lot of things we did and could have done better, but that's why we're gonna watch film and get ready and get better for next week."
On progression through the game:
"I felt like we got comfortable and started moving the ball. Once we get to the end of a drive, we just have to finish."
On carrying this game over to SWAC play:
"Yes, this is definitely something we can carry over into SWAC play. If we can move the ball on TCU, they are number one on defense in their conference, so if we can move the ball on them we'll be able to move the ball in the SWAC."
On not focusing on the score:
"Like I said, we just keep positive energy, never get down on ourselves, we've just got to keep playing. Play the next play, something good could happen, something bad could happen. We just have to play the next play."
On first snap going over Lambley's head:
"John is gonna be alright back there. He got comfortable after the first drive was under his belt. That's just butterflies in his stomach. Everybody's gonna have those, that's just positive energy."
