Rifle looks to extend 11-match winning streak
FORT WORTH – The 3rd-ranked TCU Horned Frogs look to extend their 11-match winning streak when they travel to Lexington, Va. to take on the VMI men's and women's squads.
Last weekend, the Horned Frogs posted an aggregate score of 4,708 against The Citadel, including a program record 2,384 in air rifle, while VMI shot a score of 4,466 against North Georgia.
Entering the matchup, TCU boasts the highest average air rifle score in the nation at 2,374. It also ranks fourth in the NCAA in average aggregate (4,699.6) and fifth in smallbore (2,324.8). VMI is averaging an aggregate score of 4,452.
The Frogs feature three of the top nine aggregate shooters in the NCAA. Senior Rachel Garner leads the nation with a mark of 1,182. Sophomore Elizabeth Marsh ranks eighth with an average score of 1,174.7 and junior Casey Lutz rounds out the top nine with a 1,174.
In air rifle, TCU owns the second- and third-ranked shooters in the country. Garner leads the Frogs and sits in second with a 596.4 average. She has also fired the top score in the nation this year on two separate occasions (599). Lutz owns the third best average with a mark of 596.3. VMI is led by Liat Bell who averages a score of 569.
The Horned Frogs also have three of the top 13 shooters in smallbore. Garner's average score of 585.7 ranks third in the NCAA. Marsh ranks 12th with a 582.3 average. Garner and Marsh have both shot scores of 589, tied for the second-best mark in the country this season. Freshman Kristen Hemphill has the 13th-best average in the nation (582). The Keydets are paced by John Pitman (555.3).
TCU faced off against VMI earlier this season defeating them by a score of 4,711-4,470. The match is slated to begin at 7 a.m. (CT).
