OKLAHOMA CITY – Kansas struck for a quartet of runs in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and held on for the 7-3 victory over No. 6 TCU on the opening day of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The Rundown
TCU opened the scoring with a pair of two-out runs in the second inning. Elliott Barzilli got the rally started with a two-out single and moved to third on a base hit from Ryan Merrill. Zach Humphreys tripled into the right field corner to give TCU a 2-0 lead.
As would be the case the entire game, Kansas responded to a TCU run with runs of its own. A one-out double sparked a 3-run third for the Jayhawks. Matt McLaughlin's triple tied the game at two and he scored on a base hit from Jaxx Groshans.
TCU fought hard to eventually tie the game at three in the seventh. Zach Humphreys was hit by a pitch. After stealing second, he scored on a two-out single from Austen Wade.
A lead-off walk in the eighth opened the doors for Kansas as the Jayhawks put up a four-spot in the inning to take a 7-3 lead. The big blow was a two-out single from Brett Vosik that plated the final two runs of the inning.
Nick Lodolo started for TCU and allowed just the three runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He retired the final 10 batters he faced.
