SAN ANTONIO -- TCU is in first and Annika Clark is the individual leader after Friday's opening round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship.
The Horned Frogs shot a 5-over-par 293, one stroke ahead of Oklahoma State.
"In this first round coming out, we really stayed in our process and stayed present," TCU head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin said. "That's the best I've seen them overall throughout the day from hole 1 to hole 18.
"I'm really proud of our start. In the first round, you just want to put yourself in a good position to set up for your next day. We stayed focused and had great body language. We had a lot of really good team synergy and spirit. We represented TCU with class and character, and that's all you can ask."
Clark's 69 equaled a career best set on two previous occasions. It was her third career sub-70 round. The sophomore from Highlands, Texas, has a one-stroke lead over Iowa State's Chayanit Wangmahaporn.
Clark had a team-best seven birdies, including three in a five-hole stretch on the front nine.
"I think everyone did really well," Clark said. "Coach was saying how if we had a bad hole, everyone bounced back on the next one. That just shows the grit we have as a team, which is one of our core values, and the work we're putting in really paying off."
TCU's Emmy Martin is just three shots off the lead with an even-par 72. She has now shot par or better in 10 of her last 16 rounds. Her 13th par or better round on the year has her one off the TCU single-season record. The Odessa, Fla., native totaled four birdies. Like Clark, she had three birdies in a five-hole stretch on the front nine.
Kelly McGovern recorded her third career eagle, one off the TCU record, on the par 5, 482-yard seventh hole. The lone senior in the TCU lineup added a pair of birdies en route to a 74, tied for 14th.
Tiffany Breitenwischer and Brooke McDougald carded 78s for the Horned Frogs. Breitenwischer had two birdies, while McDougald had one.
TCU's second-round tee times begin at 10 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
