FORT WORTH – The No. 1-ranked TCU women's rifle team successfully defended its Patriot Rifle Conference championship with another dominating performance this past weekend at the Ohio State rifle range.
"This team just continues to impress," raved head coach Karen Monez. "They are persistent and motivated to stay at the top of their game. It feels good when you earn the win; and they definitely earned this championship title."
For the third consecutive season, Mindy Miles took home the individual air rifle title, while Casey Lutz's career-day on the range produced a third place finish in the smallbore finals and a second-place finish overall with personal best 1,183 aggregate score.
For the 10th time this season, the Horned Frogs surpassed the 4,700 plateau, shooting a 4,726. That mark is tied for the second-best score in program history. Finishing second was Alaska-Fairbanks with a final tally of 4,705. Rounding out the final four teams were Ohio State (4,691), Air Force (4,673), Nevada (4,659) and UTEP (4,591).
TCU claimed the team titles in both smallbore (2,343) and air rifle (2,383). The air rifle score is a new school record, topping the old record of 2,379 set earlier this season.
The group of five smallbore counters all produced scores of 580 or better. Four of them qualified for the individual final. Casey Lutz qualified third with a career-high 588. Right behind her were a pair of Frogs in Rachel Garner and Ariana Grabowski who shot identical scores of 586. Miles qualified eighth with a 583.
All five shooters in air rifle produced scores of 592 or better en route to the record-breaking performance. Once again, the Frogs sent four shooters to the individual final. Topping the field was Miles, who fired a match-best 598. Sally Li finished third after shooting a 596, followed by Lutz with another career high of 595. Garner fired a 594 for a sixth-place finish.
The Horned Frogs are now 11-0 on the season. TCU will host UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the TCU Rifle Range.
