FORT WORTH, Texas - A complete performance by the No. 12 TCU men's tennis team in doubles and singles led the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 victory over Pacific in the opening round of the 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
In the first meeting ever between the programs, the Frogs (2-1) cruised through the doubles matches against the Tigers (2-1) as Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez picked up their second straight victory at the No. 1 position with a 6-2 win, while Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez followed just seconds later with a 6-2 win on court two.
Stalder moved to 2-0 in dual matches in singles action by taking down Alex Giannini, 6-3, 6-0, on court four to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. No. 55 Nuñez grabbed a straight-set victory of his own at the No.2 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Miguel Diaz for the third point, as Rybakov proved to be the clincher for the match as he broke Tadiwa Chinamo in the final game to secure the 6-4, 6-4 win and the 4-0 overall victory for the Frogs. Dating back to the 2015 season, TCU has now won 31 straight matches on the Bernard J. 'Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"I was proud of our guys to come up regardless of knowing if they were going to play or not. Everybody was ready to play and everybody was having to step up and do some things that they maybe didn't think they were going to be doing at this point. I am proud of the team to be ready regardless of the situation. Pacific had a great season last year and for us to come out and beat them 4-0 makes me very proud of the start in defending this home turf. We have had a lot of success at home and we want to keep that.
"I loved the way we played doubles today with the type of focus and intensity we had from the first point. Reese Stalder had a really good day. He has been putting in the extra work with Coach (Devin) Bowen and it showed today. He just dismantled a pretty good player and gave us a quick point that put us up 2-0 and put them in a very tough situation to come back. For (Alex) Rybakov to close out that match made me really proud of him because he knows that on the other courts we were in the middle of a few battles."
