TROON, Scotland -- TCU men's golf sophomore Stefano Mazzoli will tee off on the biggest stage of his young career on Thursday when he begins play at the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland.
The Montorfano, Italy, native qualified for the Open, the season's third major, by winning the 2015 European Amateur Championship last August. Mazzoli is the only current college player in the Open Championship field and is one of just two amateurs, joining the winner of the 2016 British Amateur.
"This is a really big deal for Stefano to be playing in a major," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He is one of the nicest guys I've ever been around, he has worked very hard and I know he is excited about this opportunity."
Mazzoli is the first TCU golfer, while still a current student-athlete, to ever play in a major tournament. He will play his first two rounds in a group alongside former Open champions John Daly and Ben Curtis. The trio will tee off at 6:09 a.m. CT on Thursday and 1:08 a.m. CT on Friday.
The 149-golfer field will be cut after the second round with the top 70 players, including ties, sticking around to play on Saturday and Sunday.
All four rounds will be televised live. The Golf Channel will have complete coverage on Thursday and Friday, beginning at 12:30 a.m. CT. Golf Channel and NBC will share coverage on Saturday and Sunday, with the Golf Channel beginning at 3 a.m. CT and NBC taking over at 6 a.m. CT.
Online streaming of the entire tournament can be found at GolfChannel.com/TheOpen. The Golf Channel will also have special online coverage from the first tee, featured holes and a marquee group.
Mazzoli competed in five tournaments for TCU last season, posting a 75.60 scoring average. He finished as high as a tie for 20th at the Amer Ari Invitational, where he recorded a season-best 212 and also carded a low-round of 68 in the third round.
Mazzoli was the first Italian winner of the European Amateur since 1992. He finished 19-under-par to win the event. Shortly after winning the European Amateur, Mazzoli made his European Tour debut at the Italian Open where he made the cut as an amateur.
