FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU women's tennis student-athletes Seda Arantekin, Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Caroline Wegner were honored by the Big 12 Conference by being named to the All-Big 12 teams, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Garrido-Rivas became the second player in program history to garner Newcomer of the Year, while Arantekin was a double honoree for the first time in her career. Arantekin earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Doubles First Team with partner Wegner for the second straight season, while also picking up an All-Big 12 Singles Second Team honor.
The No. 34 pair of Arantekin and Wegner have been solid at the No. 1 position in doubles this season for TCU. With a 21-6 overall record and a 10-4 mark in dual matches, the pair have won their last four straight matches and posted a 6-1 record in conference action. The duo have contributed to the doubles point win in nine matches this year and scored three wins over ranked opponents. This is the second straight season Arantekin has been named to the All-Big 12 Doubles Team after earning the honor with former TCU player Stefanie Tan.
Arantekin was the lone player to earn a spot on a singles team as the junior was named to the All-Big 12 Singles Second Team. The Istanbul, Turkey native has posted a 14-6 overall singles record this year with an 11-2 mark in dual matches. Arantekin went 4-1 in conference action and has won her last three straight matches. A stable presence at the top three positions of the singles lineup, Arantekin is 4-0 on court two and 5-1 on court three this spring.
A transfer from USF, Garrido-Rivas has been a consistent presence on the court for TCU in her first spring as a Horned Frog. The junior has a 22-13 overall record with a 14-4 mark in dual matches. The Spain native went 6-1 in conference action and has won her last four consecutive matches and 13 and her last 14 matches. Playing mainly at the No. 4 position, Garrido-Rivas is 11-1 on court four and put together a nine-match winning streak from that position this season.
TCU will begin competition in the NCAA Division I Team Championship by traveling to Coral Gables, Fla., for the first and second rounds at Miami from May 13-14. The Frogs will face No. 29 Wichita State on Friday at 10 a.m., CT, in the first round.
