Rifle Members Compete at Junior Olympics

FORT WORTH -- Three current members and three future members of the TCU women's rifle team had a successful showing at the Junior Olympics held in Colorado Springs last week.
Mindy Miles, Nicole Hankey and Rachel Garner competed alongside their future teammate Casey Lutz, Emily Haag and Catherine Miller.
In smallbore, the competition featured 70 shooters. Garner posted the highest kneeling score (197) and prone score (199) of all the shooters en route to shooting a 584 on day one. Hankey and Lutz both fired a 194 in standing, the third-highest mark among competitors. Hankey finished day one with a solid score of 579, followed by Lutz's 570.
On day two, both Garner and Hankey advanced to the finals. Garner earned a silver medal after posting a match score of 1,169, just one point off the gold medal. Hankey posted an eighth-place finish with a match score of 1,155, while Lutz turned in a match score of 1,139 to finish 15th.
The air rifle portion of the event featured 194 competitors. Miles led all shooters on day one with a score of 416.7. In her third string of 10, Miles fired a 105.7, which was the competition highest score in a single string of 10 shots. Garner sat fourth with a mark of 413.6, while Lutz was ninth with a score of 411.4. Hankey's day one score was a 409.5.
Miles completed her run to the gold medal with another solid performance on day two. She held a two-point lead after day one. It was narrowed to 1.4 heading into the final after she shot an 828.7. She came out on top in the finals, with 2.4 points separating her from the second place finisher.
Lutz turned in a bronze medal performance recovering from a slow start. She posted a score of 826.4, less than a point behind the silver medalist. Hankey ended the match in 13th place, shooting a total score of 819.6, just three points shy of making the eight-man final. Garner finished in 25th with a total match score of 817.1.
