AUSTIN, Texas – Brian Howard's first career complete game wasn't enough as TCU's offense was held to just four hits in a 2-0 loss at Texas on Friday night.
The Rundown
Brian Howard and Texas' Ty Culbreth went toe-to-toe through the first five innings of the game. TCU mustered just three base runners on a hit and two walks, while the Longhorns managed just two hits.
The game was decided in the sixth inning. TCU had the first chance to strike as a single, a double and an intentional walk loaded the bases with only one out. Cam Warner singled with one out and moved to third on an Evan Skoug double. The Longhorns intentionally walked Luken Baker to set up a potential double play. The strategy paid off and TCU was held off the board.
Texas seized on the momentum and turned it into the lead. Back-to-back singles had runners on the corners for the Longhorns with nobody out. Howard got a big double play ball of his own, but on the turn, Tyler Rand scored the first run of the game. Tres Barrera doubled the lead with a two-out home run.
The Longhorn bullpen pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to lock up the win.
Howard (4-1) was solid in turning in his first career complete game. He allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high nine batters in eight innings of work.
