The Rundown
Brian Howard (4-0) turned in a solid seven-inning start for TCU. He faced more than four batters in an inning just once. The junior allowed a run on two hits, walked three and struck out a career-high eight batters.
Offensively, the Horned Frogs scored seven runs on 10 hits and stole five bases in support of Howard.
TCU struck first in the second. Elliott Barzilli led off the inning with a base hit. After stealing second, an errant pick-off throw had him standing on third and he scored easily on an infield single off the bat of Michael Landestoy.
West Virginia answered in the third, taking advantage of a one-out double. A wild pitch moved Kyle Davis to third and he was able to score on a ground out from Cole Austin to make it a 1-1 game.
The Frogs wasted little time regaining the lead. Evan Skoug doubled with two outs in the third. He stole third and scored easily as the throw from the catcher sailed into left field.
In the fourth, TCU had the bases loaded with two outs. Austen Wade blooped a single into center to drive in two runs. Another errant throw by the catcher allowed Dane Steinhagen to score for a 5-1 TCU lead.
Cam Warner's second hit of the day in the sixth drove in Landestoy with the sixth run of the game. Steinhagen rounded out the scoring as he singled home Luken Baker in the seventh.
Preston Guillory closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Stat of the Game
7 – All seven of TCU's runs were scored with two outs in the inning.
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle
"Obviously, we need that as much as we ever had. Brian (Howard) did a great job. He found himself in the middle innings. He was throwing at the bottom of the strike zone finally. It's what we needed to do, pitch at the bottom of the strike zone and not walk guys."
"We had some balls fall in and certainly, they made some errors. We put pressure on them on the bases. But pitching, defense and timely hitting. Two-out hitting, if there was a way to coach it, I sure would love to know it. Those two out hits are what define the team winning or losing."
