FORT WORTH – Luken Baker's first-inning grand slam set the tone for TCU as it completed the sweep with a 14-2 win over West Virginia on Sunday.
The Rundown
Facing a 2-0 deficit after the top of the first, TCU wasted little time taking charge of the game. A base hit, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out in the first. Baker lined a grand slam over the left center field fence to put the Frogs in front 4-2.
The lead grew in the second after a lead-off walk to Michael Landestoy. Wade's second hit of the day moved Landestoy to third and he scored easily on a sacrifice fly from Cam Warner to make it a 5-2 game.
Elliott Barzilli lined his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to open the third. After a double and a stolen base from Dane Steinhagen, Landestoy grounded out to make it a 7-2 game.
TCU exploded for five runs in the fourth as it sent 10 men to the plate. Warner opened the inning with a base hit. After a Baker double, the Mountaineers brought the infield in. Josh Watson hit a grounder right at the first baseman, but the throw to the plate was wild allowing two runs to score. Barzilli followed with a double to make it 10-2. A balk and a wild pitch drove in the final two runs of the frame.
Evan Skoug opened the fifth with a double and scored on Baker's second double of the game. A Watson single put runners on the corners and Baker was able to score easily on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Barzilli.
Rex Hill (2-1) settled in after a rocky start in the first inning. He tossed five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. The defense turned a trio of double plays in the game.
Stat of the Game
9 – TCU has scored double-digit runs nine times this season. The Horned Frogs accomplished that feat just 11 times in 2015.
Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle
"We are certainly capable of scoring runs, we've already proven that. I think today was a combination of putting together a lot of good at-bats; the balls we hit hard fell in and the balls we didn't hit hard fell in too. It's not a statement on West Virginia, I think they are a regional-caliber team and I'm sure that'll be proven out over the course of the year."
"Our guys came to play. It was nice to see Rex (Hill) find some sort of rhythm and do a good job of pitching with the lead."
