AKRON, Ohio – The TCU women's rifle team put together a strong performance on Day 1 of the NCAA Championships and sit second after firing a 2,333 in smallbore.
"I'm very proud of how the team performed today," said head coach Karen Monez. "They were performing at their best when it mattered most."
TCU got off to a strong start in the first relay as the trio of Hannah Black, Rachel Garner and Sally Li fired scores of 585, 584 and 584, respectively. All three eventually went on to compete in the individual finals.
The Horned Frogs held an eight-point advantage over eventual smallbore National Champion, West Virginia, heading into the final relay of the day.
A miss-fire in the second relay proved to be the difference between first and second place. Mindy Miles self-reported the miss-fire that occurred during her first string of shots. Despite taking the zero associated with the miss-fire, Miles shot a score of 580.
"Even though Mindy's rifle malfunction was unfortunate, it was impressive how she worked to overcome it and finished her standing strong shooting 11 tens in her last 12 shots," said Monez.
Nicole Hankey contributed a 580, making TCU the lone team in the field of eight to have all five team members fire a 580 or better.
TCU and West Virginia were the lone squads to send three shooters to the finals. Garner was TCU's top finisher as she fired a 444.6 to take third place. Black shot a 42.5.2 to finish fifth, while Li came in eighth with a finals score of 399.7.
The championships conclude Saturday with air rifle. The first relay is set to start at 9:15.
