The Opponent
No. 13 Iowa State comes into Saturday with an 18-8 overall record, including a 7-6 mark in Big 12 play after falling in overtime to No. 25 Baylor, 100-91. Against the Bears, Abdel Nader led the way, scoring 26 points on 9-of-14 from the field. Georges Niang followed, scoring 24 points, while also adding eight rebounds in the loss.
On the season, Iowa State, who is 11-2 at home, has been carried by Niang. The senior is averaging 19.4 points a game and 6.4 rebounds a contest. Monte Morris has been just as solid, averaging 15.3 points, while shooting 52 percent from the field.
The Series
The Horned Frogs and Cyclones will meet for only the 14th time in program history Saturday. Iowa State leads the all-time series at 8-5 after defeating TCU in January. TCU had won five-straight in the series before dropping the last seven. The Purple and White's last victory in Ames over the Cyclones came in a 74-66 decision during the 1982 season.
Playing Ranked Foes
When TCU takes on No. 13 Iowa State Saturday, the Frogs will battle their ninth oppponent either ranked or receiving votes in their last 14 games. In all, TCU has played a total of seven ranked teams in this week's AP top-25, including four in the top-15.
News And Notes Against Iowa State
Heading into Saturday's game against Iowa State, junior Karviar Shepherd has had some impressive showings against the Cyclones during his three-year career. The Dallas native, who is averaging almost a double-double in the five games versus Iowa State, has tallied 9.8 rebounds for his career agains the Cyclones.
He has had 10 or more boards twice, which includes a 14-point, 15-board effort during his freshman season at home versus ISU.
Finding His Mark
Sophomore Chauncey Collins tallied 20 points against West Virginia last Saturday, marking the second-straight game against the Mountaineers that the Oklahoma City native has accomplished that feat. In the two games this season against WVU, Collins is averaging 20 points per game and 3.5 rebounds a contest. He also shot a combined 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc in the two outings.
Comparing The Two
A trend has become apparent in TCU's 26 games this season. In the 11 wins, the Horned Frogs have averaged 19.0 points off turnovers. In the 15 losses, TCU is only averaging 14.1 points off turnovers. In comparison, the Frogs have held the opposition to only 10.7 points in wins versus 18.6 in losses.
Parrish Pushing Ahead
Brandon Parrish led TCU in scoring against Kansas and Oklahoma State. In those two outings, the junior averaged 14 points per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field. In the Horned Frogs' last three wins over Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Texas, Parrish is shooting 53.6 percent from the field (15-of-28), including 53 percent from three (8-of-15).
He is averaging 14.7 points per game in the three wins and 3.7 rebounds. In the 11 overall games won this season, Parrish is shooting 53 percent from the floor and 52 percent from downtown. In games lost, the junior drops to 35.2 percent from the field and only 33 percent from deep.
He's Heating Up
Chauncey Collins has begun to make his mark as of late, scoring the basketball from all over the court. The sophomore, who has scored in double-figures in nine out of the 13 league games, which includes games of 20 twice versus West Virginia and 19 against Texas Tech, has hit three or more three's in six out of the 12 games.
In the seven games against league foes ranked in the top-25, Collins is averaging 13.6 points per game and 2.3 assists per contest. He is also shooting 44 percent from behind the arc in the seven outings.
Guarding The Rock
TCU is 8-2 this season when holding its opponent to under 40 percent from the field with its only losses coming at West Virginia and to K-State in its last two outings. The Horned Frogs limited Tennessee to only 33.3 percent from the floor, including only (8-of-31) 25.8 percent from behind the arc. By defeating Oklahoma State at home, the Frogs also held their sixth opponent this season to 59 points or less.
In the last two season's against league foes, TCU has now held seven conference opponents to under 60 points. The Frogs' only loss during the seven games came in a 58-53 setback at K-State last January.
One Game At A Time
Heading into Saturday, TCU has only had four players see action in all 26 games this season in Vladimir Brodziansky, JD Miller, Brandon Parrish and Michael Williams. When broken down even further, Parrish is the only Frog to have started all 26 games. The junior led the Purple and White with 13 points against Kansas and then 15 versus Oklahoma State.
