Baker Places Seventh at USA Championships

EUGENE, Oregon – Ronnie Baker capped off his time at the USA Track & Field Championships by finishing seventh in the 100-meter final on Friday night at Hayward Field.
Running out of lane eight, the Louisville, Kentucky, native posted a time of 10.19 seconds among an electric field of competitors. Earlier in the night, Baker matched his all-conditions personal-best of 9.94 (+3.0 m/s) in the event to finish fourth in heat two, earning his berth in the final. He also ran 9.94 in Thursday's first round.
Baker was one of three collegians in the eight-man final, joined by Baylor's Trayvon Bromell and USC's Beejay Lee.
From here, Baker sets his sights on the World University Games from July 3-14 in Gwangju City, South Korea.
In heat one of the men's 100-meter semifinal, Charles Silmon just missed the cut by 0.001 seconds after a fifth-place finish in a wind-aided (+3.7 m/s) heat one at 9.94. The time was the first time since the Texas Relays on March 28 that he has recorded a time under 10 seconds in the 100 meters, notching a time of 9.91(w) in Austin.
On the women's side, Jessica Young tallied a seasonal-best under any conditions thanks to a time of 11.06 (+3.2 m/s). Her time was seventh in heat two and 11th overall on Friday night.
Tomorrow, June 27, Megan Smith (discus) and Whitney Gipson (long jump) will compete, both beginning at 12:45 p.m. PDT/2:45 CDT.
