Game 3
Stony Brook 11, Sacred Heart 6
Stony Brook Head Baseball Coach Matt Senk
Opening Statement:
"I am extremely pleased to come out with a win and allow us to keep playing in this regional. The guys really came out today swinging the bats. They were more than ready to make up for the lack of timely hitting Friday, and jumping out to the early lead is always key, which we did."
"It was a hard-fought game. I give Sacred Heart a ton of credit for just competing. Basically, they went hit for hit with us, and we managed to find more runs. It was a heckuva effort by them. I am very proud of my team and we're looking forward playing again Sunday."
On giving up 15 hits:
"I don't now if I'll ever be OK with my staff giving up 15 hits, but I think that although we could have been set up a little bit better for the rest of the tournament, I think we were able to still accomplish what we wanted to do as far as having our pitching lined up. If that's what it took to keep our pitching in a place that can help us win moving forward, then I guess that's the trade-off."
Pitching for Sunday:
"I am going to take in this game (TCU-NC State) and talk it over with my entire staff. We've used our two left-handed started so it will be a right-hander, but I'm not exactly sure who that starter will be."
Casey Baker, 1B
Coming back Saturday after hitting streak was stopped Friday:
"At this point, especially Friday, the streak was the last thing on my mind. It was a big game and we would have liked to have gotten a win (against NC State). Today was the same thing, streak or no streak, I was going to try to do what I knew I could do and get a few hits."
Toby Handley, CF
On success of the team's hitting:
"Before the game coach goes over the pitcher and tells us how hard he throws and what pitches he likes to go to early and late in the count. It happens no matter what team we are playing."
Sacred Heart Head Baseball Coach Nick Giaquinto
Opening Statement:
"Our guys battled, but we didn't come up with the clutch hits. We had plenty of opportunities with some situational hitting and we could have executed a little bit more. The guys hung in there, and we scored late. We battled and battled. I'm proud of the way we played all year. That was the way we have played, We kept coming and coming. It wasn't always pretty and we didn't always get it done, but last weekend at the conference tournament it all came together. I am proud of the team and the effort throughout the course of the year."
The team's approach at the plate:
"I think we had a few more quality at-bats. Friday, (TCU's) Traver was outstanding. He was tough. His breaking ball was nasty and of course he has nice sink on his fastball. We were grounding out. Stony Brook's pitchers got out of a lot of jams. It was a heard-fought game both ways. Stony Brook is a really solid team and has been for a while. You have to tip your hat to Matt Senk and the job they did. I think our hitters were a little more selective today and we were able to square the ball up a little better. I am proud of the way we performed. I wish we could have executed a little more in some situations."
Cody Doyle, C
On going 4-for-5 against Stony Brook:
"It was a fun experience. Last night (against TCU) was a huge crowd, and that's what we were expecting. Like coach said, today as a team we were seeing the ball better and putting better swings on the ball. Last night, their pitcher was really good. Today, we had a more relaxed approach and we hit the ball a little better."
